Once a city of polar-opposite accommodation options — exorbitantly expensive luxury hotels, on the one hand, cheap pensioni of dubious cleanliness on the other — Rome now has the range of hotels you might expect in one of the most-visited destinations on the planet. But they are, on the whole, considerably more expensive than in other tourist hubs.

At the top of the market, chic boutique offerings with bars, restaurants and even shops. While older-style mid-range hotels, pensioni and B&Bs are ever numerous, some great deals are to be found in this sector. Always reserve a room well in advance, especially at peak visiting times, with lulls during winter (January to March) and particularly busy periods around major Christian holidays. Book your dream vacation here with our guide to the best hotels in Rome.

1. Bulgari Hotel Roma

Hotels don’t come prettier than this five-star spot housed in a 1930s Mussolini-era Rationalist building, just around the corner from Via del Corso and Via del Babuino. Beyond the modernist travertine and brick facade, you’ll find glamour oozing from every nook and cranny of this newly renovated place. All the rooms are filled with dazzling design touches like marble bathroom suites, plush carpets, textured headboards and mid-century modern furniture. There are five different dining spots to choose from catering for every occassion, whether you want a drop of fizz in the shimmering Bulgari Bar or a slap-up meal in the hotel restaurant where Chef Niko Romito serves up traditional Italian dishes. During your stay, don’t miss a trip to the jaw-dropping marble-clad spa, inspired by the ancient Roman Baths of Caracalla with a 20-metre pool surrounded by columns and neo-classical statues.

The mood? Breathtakingly bombastic luxury.
Location perks? Right in the centre of things in the Piazza Augusto Imperatore, next to the Mausoleum of Augustus.
Budget range? A treat spot.

Just off piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere, the Santa Maria stands on the site of a 16th-century convent. Each of the 19 bedrooms has a tiled floor, colourful decor and a spacious bathroom, and they all open onto a charming, sunny central courtyard planted with orange trees. Complimentary bicycles are available for guests to use for exploring Trastevere’s winding alleys.

The mood? Intimate and traditional.
Location perks? Every bit as charming as its medieval backdrop in Trastevere, Santa Maria boasts two tree-lined courtyards – perfect for enjoying aperitivo in the evening.
Budget range? An affordable couple's getaway.

Although situated a little way out of the action, the Cavalieri’s majestic position on top of the leafy Monte Mario hill north of the Vatican is worth the extra travel time (there is a free shuttle bus for guests), especially if you like to spend time away from the bustle of central Rome. However, with almost 400 rooms and suites, this is more about palatial extravagance than intimate escape. Amenities are what you would expect from a hotel of this grandeur: three swimming pools, a full spa and fitness centre and Rome’s only three Michelin-star restaurants, La Pergola to name but a few.

The mood? Decadence in every detail.
Location perks? Book an exclusive tour around the stately homes of Roman nobility. You'll be accompanied by a historian as you wander through the centuries.
Budget range? Certainly not cheap.

4. Hotel La Ville Rome

This stunning boutique hotel is located in the heart of Rome – perfect for exploring the city on foot. Hotel La Ville Rome offers 20 fully-equipped rooms to its guests styled in a contemporary way that equally feels homey and inviting. Born as a restoration project, the hotel combines classic elements with modern style. Just a few steps away from Via Veneto and the subway, you'll be able to explore all that Rome has to offer – in minutes. Brilliante.

The mood? Elegance meets comfort.
Location perks? When you need to take a pause, you'll also have Villa Borghese right on your doorstep – ideal for a picnic or a spot of rowing (about €3) on the lake.
Budget range? On the pricier end, so it's well worth splitting the bill.

Looking down from the top of the Spanish Steps, the Hassler remains the grande dame of Rome’s deluxe hotels. It’s got an abundance of polished marble and glamorous chandeliers but it still maintains a personal level of service. A stay in one of the 92 rooms includes top-notch amenities such as a spa, a Michelin-starred restaurant and several bars alongside spectacular views over the Roman rooftops.

The mood? Elegant, antique.
Location perks? Tremendously chic, Hassler Roma knows how to pull out all the stops. We particularly love the romantic outdoor dining experience you get during the summer at the on-site Palm Court.
Budget range? Stonkingly expensive, but one can dream.

Dating back to the 15th century, this (management will tell you) is the oldest hotel in Europe. The 32 rooms have been painstakingly restored and are fresh and uncluttered, with tiled floors and frescoes. All bathrooms have whirlpool baths. Ask for one of the rooms at the front for superb views over the Pantheon; otherwise console yourself by seeking out the glorious roof terrace, where breakfast is served al fresco in the warmer months.

The mood? Old-world aesthetic.
Location perks? Centenary history on your doorstep.
Budget range? A luxury price tag for one of the most prestigious spots in town.

The former family home of the aristocratic Spalletti Trivelli, this former family home boasts views across a little park to the manica lunga of the Quirinale palace. It’s got 12 rooms with high-class extras such as a historic library with a preservation order, a formal garden where breakfast or aperitivi can be served, and a marvellous spa in the basement. Some of the largest rooms can be linked together into immense suites, while service is discreet and a chef will whip up special meals on request. The garden also includes two large and similarly elegant suites, which offer all the same services plus self-catering facilities and gorgeous private terraces.

The mood? Living the period dream.
Location perks? It doesn't get any more opulent than this historic villa just moments from the Trevi fountain.
Budget range? A pretty penny, but you only live once.

A stone’s throw from luxury retailers like Prada and Bulgari, Crossing Condotti is remarkably central. The hotel itself is filled with gorgeous antiques from the owner, with a contemporary backdrop and attentive staff that are unfailingly helpful. It’s more of a Roman hideaway than a fully-fledged hotel, there are eight rooms and public spaces are limited to a handy kitchenette with coffee-making facilities and a fridge stocked with (free) soft drinks.

The mood? If contemporary design and art had a baby.
Location perks? There's no question that Crossing Condotti is all about creating cosy elegance. Despite feeling tucked away, the boutique hotel is incredibly close to the Spanish Steps.
Budget range? Think a little less cheap, but oh so charming.
