Founded in 1894 by Caesar Ritz, the father of luxury hotels, the St Regis was treated to a staggering $35-million makeover in 1999, and remains a bastion of old-style luxury to put the recent flood of five-star arrivistes in the shade. The original chandeliers hang in massive reception rooms with acres of marble and opulent gold, beige and red furnishings. Rooms have been individually designed and are filled with a mix of Empire, Regency and Louis XV-style furnishings. There are butler (suites and imperial rooms only) and limousine services, and a sauna.
