This is a hotel of many parts. The main Bauer Hotel occupies an ugly 1940s extension of the original 18th-century hotel building; inside, the vast hall with its marble, gold and black looks like a grand old ocean liner. Luxurious, antique Il Palazzo is housed in the older building and has Grand Canal frontage. Adjacent to the Bauer, Casa Nova is a series of comfortable, sunny serviced apartments. The latest arrival is Bauer Palladio Hotel & Spa, a former convent on the Giudecca with a pretty garden but rooms that still have a whiff of the nunnery about them. If you can afford it, Il Palazzo's discreet opulence is perhaps the best bet.
