Streaming services may have dampened the movie-going lifestyle, but there's still a certain magic around catching a movie in the cinema. And if you want to take the romance and nostalgia up a notch? An outdoor cinema will do the trick.

For where to catch a flick under the stars in Asia, you only have to look as far as Time Out's list of the 30 most beautiful outdoor cinemas in the world. Our picks range from a cinema in a cemetery to a venue in a Roman amphitheatre, with a gorgeous spot called Westpac OpenAir overlooking Sydney Harbour, the Opera House, and Harbour Bridge topping the list.

However, what we're interested in are the beautiful outdoor cinemas that can be found in Asia, and there are just two spots that rank. The most spectacular one in the region? Hendrick's Sunset Cinema in Singapore, set on the sandy shores of Sentosa Island's Tanjong Beach. Framed by swaying palm trees and expansive sunset views (hence the name), this is where crowds have been settling in since 2017 to catch Oscar-worthy films. To complete the experience: deck chairs, wireless noise-cancelling headphones, and even DJ sets and food trucks before the movies start.

The other outdoor cinema in Asia to make the list is The Grounds in Hong Kong. This one's for those who like lots of personal space – the venue is set up with 100 'socially-distanced' private pods that can seat up to four people. And talk about service: you can order food from various restaurants via QR code and get your items served straight to your pod. Backdropped by Hong Kong's unmistakable skyline, The Grounds also plays host to live music, yoga, and other lifestyle events.
