There are few mountains in the world as famous as Mount Fuji (the best contender in Asia being, of course, Mount Everest). For first-timers to Japan, a trip to see the perfectly conical mountain is almost definitely part of the itinerary. There are a myriad of ways to enjoy Mount Fuji views, with popular options from Fuji Five Lakes, Hakone, or even on the bullet train between Tokyo and Osaka. But for a really spectacular option, you might want to take to the skies.

Japan offers helicopter tours and private charter flights that'll take you on a breathtaking trip around Mount Fuji. And now, regional airline Fuji Dream Airways is launching scenic flight experiences around the famous mountain – available as standalone bookings for the first time ever.

Before, you'd have to book the scenic flights as part of group tour packages – a pricier and less flexible option if you're the sort of traveller who prefers to make your own plans. Now, though, you can slot in a nifty one-hour flight on Fuji Dream Airways' 76-seat or 84-seat Embraer aircraft for close-up views of the iconic mountain. According to Fuji Dream Airways, the plane will cruise at a lower altitude as it passes Mount Fuji, so you're guaranteed a good view. During the flight, you'll also get an eyeful of other sights like the Japanese Southern Alps and Shizuoka's coastline.

Flights depart every Saturday, Sunday, and public holiday at 7.30am all throughout July and August, with additional departures now added for September and October. Fares start from 20,000 Japanese yen (around £101) per person, exclusive of fuel surcharge and passenger facility costs. Kids under three years old get to fly for free.

If you're ready for that dream flight around Mount Fuji, book at least seven days in advance on Fuji Dream Airways' website here
