Aussies don’t mess around when it comes to bakery goods. From classic beef pies with tomato sauce to gourmet sausage rolls and vegetarian pasties, we’ve got a flaky creation for every craving. Naturally, we also have a nationwide competition dedicated to crowning the absolute best of them all.
Now in its remarkable 37th year, the Official Great Aussie Pie Competition has just announced its 2026 champions. Over three competitive days, a panel of industry experts blind-tasted hundreds of pastries against a strict set of criteria – scoring everything from shape, colour and size to filling quality, flavour and texture.
For the first time ever, the 2026 judges crowned an Official Great Aussie Grand Champion – an exclusive title reserved for any bakery that takes out two (or more) of the five major categories. Adelaide’s beloved Orange Spot Bakery made history by winning both Best Meat Pastie and Best Plain Sausage Roll, earning the family-run bakery a remarkable $21,000 grand prize.
Arguably the most anticipated title is for the Best Plain Pie, which was fiven to Victoria’s multi-award-winning Buddy Bakery in Melton. Another of the state's gems, Gisborne Bakery & Café, took out the runner-up spot, giving you the perfect excuse to organise a regional road trip – purely for research, of course.
With three coastal locations across Victoria, Rolling Pin Pies & Cakes also had a stellar run, claiming Best Gourmet Pie with its unconventional roo rendang creation. It's safe to say you can't go wrong here, with the bakery also winning Best Potato Top Pie, Best Slow-Cooked Barbecue Pie, Best Seafood Pie and Best Game Pie.
