An Adelaide bakery reclaimed the top prize at the South Australian Baking Show

For many Aussies, a warm, flaky sausage roll is the absolute definition of comfort food. Some stand by the classic servo pastry, complete with a zig-zag line of tomato sauce down the length of the log. Others prefer a more gourmet approach, opting for premium bakeries that present their rolls with nigella seeds baked into the flaky crust and a side of caramelised onion relish. But if there’s one thing we can all agree on, it’s that sausage rolls are elite.
If you’re hunting for the absolute best sausage roll in Australia, the verdict is in! Adelaide’s multi-award-winning Banana Boogie Bakery has just reclaimed its title at the Baking Association of Australia’s 2026 South Australian Baking Show. Although the competition is hosted in South Australia, the coveted sausage roll category is open to entries from all over the country – having been won by Victoria’s Whittlesea Bakehouse in 2025.
With locations in Belair, North Plympton and soon-to-be-opened Adelaide Central Market, Banana Boogie Bakery is no stranger to the spotlight. The team previously won the title of Australia's Best Sausage Roll at the South Australian Baking Show in 2023 and 2024, plus at The Official Great Aussie Pie Competition last year.
Co-owner Jason Spencer shared on Instagram, “After missing out last year, the team went back to the recipe book, made a few minor tweaks… and this weekend we officially took back the title of Best Sausage Roll in Australia at the South Australian Baking Show.”

When we previously asked the team what makes their sausage rolls so special, they said: “It’s the top-notch flaky pastry crafted by our most experienced bakers. The meat has to be top-notch and have the right amount of fat content so it doesn’t shrink. The balance of seasonings is also immensely important.”
On top of being named Australia’s best sausage roll, the team also took out first prize for their vanilla slice and beef pie, along with the Most Successful Cake & Pastry Exhibitor. The celebrations continued for the bakery’s star apprentice, Lauren Govender, who took home gold for her carrot cake and gourmet doughnut (key lime cheesecake flavour), and was recognised as the number one Apprentice Pastry Chef in the country. Huge congratulations to the entire Banana Boogie team!
