Australia has no shortage of bucket-list destinations, but it’s always nice when our sunny country Down Under gains global recognition. And this week, three Aussie gems have just earned international recognition – making it onto Time Out's list of the world's most underrated places to visit in 2027.

Compiled by Time Out's global travel team, the ranking encourages travellers to look beyond the usual tourist hotspots. This year, Tasmania ranked 28th, Newcastle 30th and Victoria's Gippsland region 39th. Here's why they're worth visiting.

Tasmania (28th place globally)

Australia's smallest state packs a serious punch, with more than 800 hiking trails, pristine beaches and much of its wilderness protected under UNESCO World Heritage status. It's also one of the world's only carbon-negative places. Go Tassie. Beyond the great outdoors, there's Hobart's wildly boundary-pushing Dark Mofo festival, MONA, the historic Port Arthur site and a thriving food and drink scene. Our advice? Arrive hungry, and make time for a hike.

Newcastle, NSW (30th place globally)

Just two hours north of Sydney, Newcastle offers a pretty unbeatable combination of beachside living and big-city energy. The former coal-mining town is now home to hip cafés, world-class restaurants, a super impressive art gallery and some truly spectacular coastal walks. Our tips for a weekend in Newy? Spend a day at Nobbys Beach or Merewether Ocean Baths, explore the Honeysuckle waterfront and finish with sunset drinks at QT Newcastle's rooftop bar before dinner at Flotilla.

Gippsland, Victoria (39th place globally)

Stretching across eastern Victoria, Gippsland is a nature enthusiast’s playground, with dramatic coastlines, dreamy beaches, stunning national parks, spectacular mountain ranges and charming country towns. From lake swims to coatal hikes to top-tier farm-to-table feeds, there are a whole heap of ways to fill a weekend away or a longer road trip.
