Time Out says

Built to commemorate the 1936 Olympic Games, and just by that infamous Olympic stadium in the west of the city, this historic 22,000-seat open-air venue was sited within a natural valley to resemble a Greek amphitheatre and remains today, a superb venue to take in a rock, pop, classical or operatic performance. An eclectic year-round programme sees some of the world's biggest names dropping by on a regular basis.
