Time Out says

This heartwarming meditation follows Joan on her search for identity and belonging as she tries to find her estranged father

An intimate tale about land, roots and reconnection, Don’t Ask What The Bird Look Like traces the story of Joan on her search for belonging. Since her father left when she was just a little girl, Joan hasn’t seen her father. Suddenly, she finds herself compelled by a need for answers; she wants a key to her past to find out more about who she truly is.

Joan ventures into the country and finds Mick, who bears a little resemblance to the man who taught her to play Scrabble all those many moons ago. Amid the flies, the heat, the dust and the stillness of this small river town lurk many ghosts and mysteries between the cracks. Over cups of tea and Scrabble in Mick’s old house, Joan discovers family secrets that have been buried under the surface for decades.

With light waves of humour but a strong philosophical undercurrent, Don't Ask What The Bird Look Like is an exciting new work from a First Nations voice, directed by Queensland Theatre’s Artistic Elder Roxanne McDonald with Lee Lewis.

Running between August 19 until September 9 at the Billie Brown Theatre, you can get tickets to see the play on the Queensland Theatre website here. Spend a 'Night with the Artists' on August 28 to look behind the curtain at what it takes to take a production from script to stage.
