Audition Agatha Christies' "A Murder Is Announced" says
“A Murder is Announced” is a classic Agatha Christie murder mystery based on the 1950 novel of the same name and has remained one of her most enduring and popular “whodunits”. This adaptation, originally performed in 1977, is still one the most popular plays from the undisputed “Queen of Crime”. The entire action takes place in the sitting room of Lettica Blacklock, owner of Little Paddocks. An announcement in the local paper brings the neighbours to call, the nights go out, a gun goes off, a body falls but will more follow or will Miss Maple work it out in time?

I’m pleased to be directing this wonderful play for the Mousetrap stage, particularly as it features the famous Miss Marple. To this point, I have a very definite idea as to what I want for my Marple. While many famous actresses have played this character such as Margret Rutherford, Helen Hayes and more recently Julia McKenzie, to my mind none compare to Joan Hickson. Filmed for the BBC between 1984 and 1992 Joan Hickson is, for me the definitive “little old lady with a mind like a steel trap” as she is described in the Christie novels.

As for the other characters on stage, I’m fairly open to suggestions. Ages are, to an extent reasonably flexible. English accents are preferable but once again I’m fairly flexible. As long as you don’t sound like Kylie Mole it’s something that can be worked on.
As always with Christie it will be set in her time, that being late 40’s, early 50’s. While it is certainly not necessary to dress for the audition, it may help when trying to understand the interplay between the characters.
I’d love to see you all at the audition, if you have any questions please feel free to email me at
