World Science Festival Brisbane says
Climate change, acidification, overfishing, habitat destruction and plastic pollution are the consequences of an ever-burgeoning global population that is threatening our marine environment. As the impact of human industrialisation flows into our oceans, what action can humanity take to counter our own devastating environmental effect?

Whether the solution to ocean preservation is increasing marine reserves, managing fisheries, or reforming environmental accountability, advancing technologies will empower our actions with unprecedented geographical, environmental and social reach.

Big data analytics and sophisticated surveillance have revolutionised our explorative and observational capabilities, whilst innovations in bio-monitoring predict the development of autonomous self-monitoring ecosystems. Future visions of ‘smart’ engineering promise development with minimal environmental damage, and mobile technology is mobilising citizen scientists towards common conservation goals, on land and sea.

But, is it too little too late? Join our world class panel of marine experts as they examine how human ingenuity and innovation could hold the key to saving our oceans… and ourselves in the process.

Participant: Tanya Ha, Rod Connolly, Arnold Dekker, Emma Johnston, Gretta Pecl and Emma Lee.
