Queensland Conservatorium - Musical Theatre says
In the hell-hole that was Botany Bay in winter 1789 and on the occasion of the King’s birthday, the convicts, under the direction of a young Lieutenant of Marines, produced Farquhar’s sparkling comedy 'The Recruiting Officer'. It became the first play ever performed in what would become Australia. Through the workings of art, both the jailed and the jailers receive an emancipation of sorts with relief from the unendurable, hope triumphing over despair.
