Oxfam's annual 'Inequality Speaker Night' has arrived! This year, two presenters will focus in on the theme of Inequality, as it applies to Land Rights and the Law, both in Australia and internationally.
Please note the time of 5 PM (for a 5:30 PM start) is to allow guests the chance to enjoy the food and drinks provided. This event is designed to be an informative and engaging presentation with ample opportunity for questions and an open and insightful discussion.

​Almost two years ago Oxfam revealed that four of Australia's biggest banks were investing in agriculture and timber companies which were associated with land grabs in developing countries; land grabbing refers to the activity of forcing local people from their homes and land without proper consent or compensation. Following this alarming report, all four banks now claim to have responded to the issue.
Shona will present on Oxfam's latest report 'Still Banking on Land Grabs', drawing on examples she will evaluate this claim by the big four banks.

Gordon will present his views on how the aboriginal people of this land have had a legal identity imposed on them by Australian laws; a legal identity that constructs them as unequal legal subjects and functions to achieve ends that the colonising state has constructed for indigenous people. Whether this be laws concerning education, employment, health or land rights and Native Title. Gordon will discuss how even campaigns such as 'Constitutional Recognition' attempts to entrench this power dynamic into the Australian legal system.
