Social Entrepreneurship - Cleaning, Connecting and Creating Powerful Community Conversations

GUEST SPEAKERS: Lucas Patchett and Nic Marchesi, 2016 Young Australians of The Year, Co-Founders, Orange Sky Laundry

You will be amazed when you hear what transpired when best mates, and social entrepreneurs, Lucas Patchett and Nic Marchesi decided to build a free mobile laundry in their old van to help the homeless.

Recently named as 2016 Young Australians of the Year, Lucas and Nic's out there concept, Orange Sky Laundry is now the world's first free mobile laundry service for the homeless.

In 2014 these two young men came up with the crazy idea to put two washing machines and two dryers in a van and wash and dry clothes for free. Why? Well with the 2011 census revealing that 105,000 people are homeless on any given night in Australia, they actually decided to do something about it.

Starting in the streets of Brisbane, Orange Sky Laundry has now grown to 10 services across Australia in Brisbane, Gold Coast, Melbourne, Sydney, Sunshine Coast, Canberra, Perth, Adelaide, South East Melbourne and Hobart. In February 2015, they even took their mobile laundry to North Queensland to wash clothes in cyclone affected communities.

Run by 650 volunteers across the country, the custom fitted vans with two commercial washing machines and two dryers service over 71 locations and wash over 6.39 tonnes of laundry a week, however most importantly, are the 1,300 hours of positive and genuine conversations held with the homeless whilst their washing goes through the cycle each week.

Lucas and Nic's vision is a world where people who are homeless are positively connected with the community. Their mission is to provide a platform for conversations, volunteering and opportunities through a free mobile laundry for our homeless friends worldwide. Their overall drive is to see others treated how they would want to be treated themselves, ensuring every interaction is positive and genuine. These 2 key aims are underpinned by being responsive and reliable, showing innovation and creativity, promoting education and value adding and displaying respect and integrity.

Lucas and Nic plan to expand services Australia-wide with the aim of positively connecting the community and improving the lives of others. They have recently also launched a mobile shower service which is proving to be a bigger hit with their clients.

Join us for lunch and go behind the scenes of Lucas and Nic's enterprise and discover what inspires the new breed of social impact entrepreneurship that is changing the world.
