YOUNG PEOPLE AND THE MEDIA - Q&A FORUM

AN INVITATION TO CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE

The theme for this year’s Children’s Week (22-30 October) is based on Article 17 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, which states that all children have the right to reliable, diverse and enriching information.

So what better time to kick-off a discussion about the portrayal of young people in the media?

Our panel of experts from the Queensland Government, the media, and the community will be there to get the discussion rolling, to hear your views, and to answer your challenging questions. Things like…

- How does the media represent children and young people (and is it accurate)?

- What messages do children and young people see and hear about themselves from the media every day?

- How can children and young people make sure their voices are heard in the media?

- Does the media give children and young people the information they need?

- How do we make things better?

Who should come? Children and young people of all ages are welcome to come along. Don’t worry; this isn’t going to be a boring old meeting with adults lecturing you. This is going to be a lively discussion about what YOU think. Feel free to ask challenging questions or to just listen and enjoy. (Plus, there’ll be free afternoon tea!)

Interested adults are welcome but they need to remember that this is a forum about the voices of young people. Please make sure your adults don’t take over or distract the children and young people from their discussion ;-)

Teachers, parents, carers and youth workers, please feel free to bring along a group of young people.

4pm: Registration and afternoon tea
4.30pm: Forum starts
5.30pm: Forum concludes (but we have the room until 6pm if we want to keep chatting)

For more information contact Helen on 0410 541997 or email qld@napcan.org.au.

Although this is a free event, please register so that we know numbers for catering.
