Time Out says

World-renowned Dutch industrial interior designer Marcel Wanders has not only created a hotel for Buda’s unhurried Bem tér, but a complete vision of Hungarian mythology. The Kimpton BEM Budapest is more than just a historical reconstruction, but something much more exciting: dense, layered, almost theatrical interiors, where Hungarian folk motifs – the turul bird, the magic deer, floral ornamentation – combine with contemporary luxury to create a strange yet effective mix.

The entire stay here is like stepping into an ancient Hungarian legend, only with five-star bedding, Balmain toiletries and superb gastronomic options. The AGOS restaurant and HUSO bar on the ground floor are a strong reason to stop by even if you are not a hotel guest, while the rooftop Fennen acts as a secret oasis above the city.

Nothing acts as mere background as far as Wanders is concerned: the lamps, the textiles, the reflections, the corridors, the furniture and the inner garden are all part of the same story. This makes the Kimpton BEM Budapest more than a spectacular design hotel: it is both a refuge and a starting point, a calm, elegant Buda base in one of the best locations in the city, nice to come back to after a long walk, a detour to the Castle District or a wander along the Danube.

Rooms with a view – and birdsong

Let’s start with the most important thing: the bed is huge, soft and dangerously comfortable. The kind that easily changes your morning plans, and it takes a lot of willpower not to bargain for another half-hour between the pillows. I stayed on the third floor, and my window looked not at the street, but at the hotel’s inner garden – which adds a lot to the feeling that Kimpton BEM is both in the middle of the city and yet a little hidden from it.

The garden is not just decoration, but a continuation of the interior spaces: a huge glass dome resembling a birdcage extends above it, which guides the light further into the interior of the building, giving the entire space an almost fairy-tale atmosphere. In the morning, light filters in from here, birdsong can be heard from below, and for a few moments you can really forget that you are a few minutes’ walk from the busy hub of Margaret Bridge.

The room amenities are what you would expect from a five-star city hotel: fast WiFi, a hairdryer, an iron, a coffee- and teamaker, a smart TV, a comfortable work area and Balmain Paris toiletries await the guest. And design enthusiasts will be especially pleased that even work here becomes an experience: sitting in a Moooi chair in front of the patio doors overlooking the inner garden, even emailing seems less of an everyday task.

The colour scheme of the rooms is comprised of deep blues, greens, warm metallic details and folkloric patterns, but the view does not come at the expense of comfort. This is the best thing about it: the room is not only photogenic, but also really liveable. It is quiet, well-equipped, comfortable and knows exactly what you would expect from a five-star Buda haven: it is nice to step foot in, relax, work and then set off again the next day.

Spa, gym and Kimpton Social Hour

One of the great virtues of the Kimpton BEM is that despite its spectacular interior, it doesn’t feel cold or overly composed. Staff are kind, attentive. but not intrusive, and the common spaces function both as photogenic design backdrops and as useful yet comfortable locations.

There is a 24-hour fitness centre, a spa area, a steam room and as hot tub. As befits the Kimpton brand, it has a dog-friendly approach, while yoga equipment and bike rentals are also part of the experience. However, one of the most beautiful points of the hotel is clearly the hidden, nature-inspired rooftop Fennen Skybar, offering an amazing panorama of the Buda side, while the atmosphere of the space is much more intimate than you would expect from a classic rooftop bar. Cocktails, panoramic views and greenery are but a few floors from urban hubbub.

The Kimpton Social Hour merits a special mention, a kind gesture on behalf of the management, a more relaxed, communal at the end of the day, when the hotel starts to function not only as accommodation, but also as a meeting point.

Hungarian flavours and legends

The hotel’s restaurant is one of the most serious gastronomic venues in Budapest. AGOS combines Mediterranean and Hungarian flavours easily, elegantly and sometimes playfully. In the morning, the restaurant shows a completely different face as an elegant and comfortable brunch spot. The bakery and bread counter deserves special attention: premium sourdough breads, select pastries, and fresh, crispy, beautifully presented offerings await guests.

In addition to AGOS, the hotel also has Huso, the ground-floor bar that draws on the legend of the Danube sturgeon, and Fennen Skybar, the rooftop spot that completes the experience with cocktails and a city panorama.

What's nearby?

One of the great advantages of the Kimpton BEM Budapest is that it is both central and quiet. Bem József tér is on the Buda side, close to the Danube, Margaret Bridge, Batthyány tér and the Castle District, yet you don’t feel like you’re in the middle of tourist traffic. This part of the city is greener, more liveable and quieter, while Budapest’s classic attractions are easily accessible on foot or by public transport.

The hotel's location in Buda particularly suit it: it doesn't offer loud urban luxury, but a slightly hidden, introverted world. A place worth stopping by for dinner or a cocktail, not just as a tourist, but as a local as well.
