The best music festivals in Budapest & Hungary in 2026

Festival season in Hungary sees communal gatherings in island, lake or forest locations, including the stellar Sziget

Hungarians love to gather on island retreats, beside cooling lakes or deep in the forest for their summer music festivals. The island is, of course, Sziget, the biggest music event in the region, a multi-day, multi-stage extravaganza. While its star quality, headliners-wise, has been dimmed for 2026, some 400,000 music lovers will still be beating a path (or boarding a boat) to this familiar retreat.

With no Kolorádó or Balaton Sound, STRAND by Lake Balaton and B.My.Lake by Lake Velence are probably the next best things. SopronFest has upped the ante on attractions this summer, installing a tower for ziplining over the crowd, and a funfair for the less intrepid. Away from the Sziget, big names are few and far between, but admission and drinks are pretty affordable and you’ll see pretty much the best Hungary has to offer music-wise.

At the time of writing, there were tickets of some kind available for all these events, just click through to the website. All also had parking spaces, too. To get the train from Budapest, book with MÁV – there’s usually transport provided from the nearest station to the festival site.

Time Out Market Budapest

1. Sziget

The original is still the best. Returning acts and partygoers always come back to Sziget, named after its island location an easy hop by boat, train or bike from Budapest. In place since the summer of ’93, when this multi-stage, multi-day festival was created to regenerate Budapest’s underground music scene of the pre-’89 era, Sziget swiftly went seriously commercial, inviting big headliners such as Bowie, the Foo Fighters and Green Day, and almost falling victim to its own success.

After crowd figures for the week broke the half-million mark and foreign festivalgoers began to outnumber Hungarians, there has been a rethink. As well as keeping attendances to around 400,000, management has introduced a student discount ticket for local music fans. Weekly passes for all at under €400 and day tickets at €105 (plus handling fees) remain affordable compared to similar events elsewhere in Europe – although there’s nothing really to compare with Sziget for the sheer breadth of fun it offers for all ages.

Who’s playing? Florence & the Machine, Twenty One Pilots, Lewis Capaldi

Where: Óbudai-sziget, 1033 Budapest

Getting there: Sziget is about 20-25mins from central Budapest by suburban HÉV train to Filatorigát or boat from Margaret Bridge.

When: August 11-15 & Day 0 on August 10

2. STRAND

Australian drum ‘n’ bass outfit Pendulum headline this four-day music festival at the familiar Balaton location of Zamárdi, where the lake plays just as big a role in the holiday fun. Some pretty big Hungarian names are involved, too – Carson Coma, Bagossy Brothers Company, Analog Balaton– while Timmy Trumpet and Robin Schulz appear on the opening day. With day tickets going for Ft 25,990 (€74), and plenty of camping to be had, this is the classic Hungarian festival experience.

Who’s playing? Pendulum, Blahalouisiana, Purple Disco Machine

Where: Kiss Ernő utca, 8621 Zamárdi

Getting there: Zamárdi is 1hr 30mins from Budapest Déli by train

When: August 6-8

3. B.My.Lake

'Groove, Beach, Love' are the watchwords of this three-day electronica fest by Lake Velence, 30 minutes from Budapest before you reach Balaton. Returning to this more intimate setting nearer the capital, B.My.Lake hasn’t dropped its standards where acts are concerned.

Possibly benefitting from the on-off nature of the nearby and once more prestigious Balaton Sound festival – cancelled in 2025, doubtful for 2026 – B.My.Lake has managed to attract the likes of Adam Beyer & Joseph Capriati. The setting is idyllic, with parking, camping and a bus shuttle provided from Velence station.

Who’s playing? Deborah De Luca, Sven Väth, Chris Leibing

Where: Északi Strand, Evezős út 1, 2481 Velence

Getting there: Velence is 40mins from Budapest Déli or Kelenföld by train

When: July 16-18

4. SopronFest

Way out west by the border with Austria, Sopron has been staging major music festivals for many a summer. This July’s bash is being headlined by those old troupers, The Prodigy, joined by Kruder & Dorfmeister, and a number of big Hungarian names.

New for this year is a zip line disco from a tower 30 metres high for the brave and the foolhardy to attempt a new kind of crowdsurfing, while saner festivalgoers can do battle on the dodgems or ride the Ferris wheel. You’ll find various daytime activities Behind the Stone House, breakfast, a vinyl café, World Cup screenings, happy-hour drinks, while the city of Sopron offers a range of tertainment in dozens of locations across the city in the run-up to the main event.

Who’s playing? The Prodigy, Kruder & Dorfmeister, Wellhello

Where: Harkai út 34, 9400 Sopron

Getting there: Sopron is 2hrs 15mins from Budapest Kelenföld by train

When: July 2-4

5. Fishing on Orfű

This long-established lakeside music festival outside the city of Pécs in southern Hungary brings a regular crowd to watch top Hungarian acts at prices locals can afford – a day ticket is Ft 22,990 (€65), a four-day pass Ft 59,990 (€170). The main driving force behind the event has been András Lovasi, initially of the phenomenally successful alt-rock outfit Kispál és a Borz, and now the man leading Kiscsillag, both of whom tread the boards here. Most of all, Fishing on Orfű is a celebration of Pécs itself, a former European Capital of Culture, with a serious gastro and wine element integral to the strong musical line-up.

Who’s playing? Bëlga, Analog Balaton, Carson Coma

Where: Orfűi-tó, 7677 Orfű

Getting there: Pécs is 2hrs 30mins from Budapest Kelenföld by train, then it’s a 20min drive to Orfű

When: June 24-27

6. Paloznaki Jazzpiknik

For several summers now, reasonably well-known jazzy, poppy names have been appearing at this relaxed musical gathering for grown-ups tucked in from the shores of Lake Balaton. This year, Rick Astley is headlining – remember his Glasto set in 2023? – with a little gravitas provided by award-winning jazz and soul singer Gregory Porter. The festival is also known for its gastronomic prowess and, this being Balaton, its wine.

Who’s playing? Rick Astley, Gregory Porter, Matt Bianco

Where: Sport utca 4, 8220 Paloznak

Getting there: A train from Budapest Déli is 2hrs to Csopak, 15mins from the site on foot or 3-4mins in a taxi. Piknikbuses run from Balatonalmádi, Balatonfűzfő, Balatonfüred and Veszprém, all around 2hrs from Budapest by mainline train

When: August 6-8

7. EFOTT

Hungary’s oldest festival geared to a younger crowd celebrates its 50th anniversary this summer – although the National Tourist Meeting of University and College Students (Hungarian acronym: EFOTT) was more a pioneering camp for Young Communists back then. Settled at a verdant spot near Lake Velence since 2015, it usually stages several in-demand Hungarian acts – this summer Halott Pénz, Ivan and the Parozol, and Beton.Hofi – but the attraction here is the communal ambience, the affordable prices and the many activities for kids.

Who’s playing? Halott Pénz, Carson Coma, Bëlga

Where: 8096 Sukoró

Getting there: Sukoró is over 1hr from Budapest, first taking the train from Kelenföld to Kápolnásnyék, where festival buses run to the site

When: July 8-12

8. Ozora Festival

A festival of tribal harmony rather than big-name acts barking at you from a main stage. Ozora brings a like-minded community to rolling slopes in the middle of nowhere, transformed into an alternative paradise of glowing lights and plentiful bangles. Acts on the Ozora stage include Blue Planet Corporation, Astral Projection and the Star Sounds Orchestra – you get the picture – the only rules being no national flags and no full nudity except at the beach. Around the entertainment, there are therapy and healing sessions, and no little yoga.

Who’s playing? Hilight Tribe, Strontium Dogs, Merkaba

Where: Dádpuszta 235, 7015 Iger

Getting there: Ozora is laying on shuttle buses from Budapest airport, and from the nearest train station of Simontornya (1hr 10mins from Budapest Kelenföld

When: July 24-Aug 4
