Time Out says

Ah, Franschhoek, that bastion of fine living in the Cape Winelands, where the tricolore flutters in the summer breeze and the main street is bustling with wealthy, well-dressed folk sipping rosé in the South African sunshine. Little wonder that Franschhoek – or ‘French Corner’ – valley is one of the most popular destinations in the Cape Winelands.

From the Wine Tram to wine tasting to a menu of fine restaurants to discover, you’ll need a few days here to see it all. There’s no shortage of luxurious hotels and guesthouses offering the last word in Winelands luxury, but what if you’re looking for a taste of this champagne lifestyle on a box-wine budget? Finding an affordable bed isn’t easy, but it’s also not impossible, thanks to spots like Neighbourgood Gables. While the Neighbourgood brand started out offering co-working space in and around Cape Town (check out our comprehensive co-working guide over here), they have since expanded to offer a fantastic range of accommodation in the city and Winelands.

Why stay at Neighbourgood Gables?

If you want the character of a homestay with the ease of a guesthouse, Neighbourgood Gables is a winner. There’s a laid-back charm to the space, which is filled with like-minded travellers that you might bump into at the pool or in the breakfast room.

It’s also just a few blocks up from the main road, which is lined with excellent restaurants and shops, meaning you can park your car and explore town on foot.

Last, but definitely not least, is price. Neighbourgood Gables offers excellent value in a valley never short on expensive places to stay. If you’re watching your budget, it’s worth a look.

What are the rooms like?

There are seven rooms across the property, each with its own selling points. Deluxe rooms are budget-friendly, but offer less living space, while the Suite is an expansive space ideal for longer stays.

I stayed in Superior Room 4, which is something of a Goldilocks option. Situated on the first floor (note that there’s no elevator), it offers plenty of living area, with French doors opening onto the quiet end of a wide balcony. Shaded by trees, close to the pool and with stunning views of the nearby mountains, it’s a fine spot to while away the afternoon with a book and a glass of wine.

The décor is comfortable and homely, rather than particularly memorable or modern. Wicker furniture is a little outdated, but then again you’re unlikely to spend long hours in your room here… it’s best suited as a base for exploring the valley.

What is the service like?

Brisk and efficient. There are staff on hand, but beyond check-in you won’t see much of them. There’s a small lounge downstairs with an honesty bar and ice machine, and plenty of maps and brochures to guide you in town.

What is the food like?

Neighbourgood Gables only offers breakfast (no surprise in a foodie town like Franschhoek) and it is perfectly adequate to set you up for the day. Start with a small continental selection (cereals, fruit juices, and so on) before your choice of hot breakfast. You’ll find the usual suspects on offer, and a full English is perhaps your safest bet. It’s hearty and well-cooked, but not especially fancy.  If you don’t want to dine in, Motherdough bakery is a short walk away, and does fantastic baked goods and light meals.

What activities are available?

On-site, the main leisure activity is the pool, set in a small shady courtyard. There are a handful of loungers on offer, and it’s a great place to chill out after a day out exploring. The lounge is likely to be a popular spot in the cold winter months.

What is nearby?

Well, pretty much the whole town! It’s a five or ten-minute walk to the centre of Franschhoek, where you’ll find a choice of restaurants. Another five minutes and you’re at the terminal for the popular Franschhoek Wine Tram, and another ten minutes up the hill brings you to the delightful Huguenot Monument. For anything further, you’ll need a hire car or a bicycle to explore the valley.

Why you should book a stay at Neighbourgood Gables

Because not every stay has to be about cutting-edge design and five-star hospitality. If you’re more focused on spending your days out exploring, with a homely base to return to for the evening, Neighbourgood Gables ticks the boxes nicely.
