Time Out says

The invitation to spend time at the Turbine Hotel on Thesen Islands in Knysna couldn't have come at a better moment. After several challenging weeks, I badly needed a recharge. What better place than a beautifully converted power station in one of South Africa's most stunning towns, where history meets modern luxury in a truly unique way.

Located along the Garden Route, the Turbine Hotel is about a 6-hour (roughly 500 km) road trip from Cape Town. It's a rewarding and scenic drive through dramatic mountain passes, as well seaside towns like Mossel Bay and George, before arriving in the lagoon-side paradise of Knysna.

Why stay at the Turbine Hotel and Spa

The hotel is surrounded by water on three sides, providing easy access to activities such as kayaking, whale watching and boat rides to nearby nature trails. This peaceful island setting provides a tranquil escape, while keeping guests connected to Knysna's natural beauty and vibrant community. The hotel's design also perfectly blends respectful nods to its industrial past with modern boutique luxury that pampers you while honouring the original building's spirit.

The history buffs among you will love the owners' dedication to preserving the authenticity of the original power station. The reception area immediately commands attention with wallpaper featuring original turbine plant plans, and throughout the hotel, large machines and steel pillars are thoughtfully preserved and incorporated into the décor. Some of these artefacts are painted in vivid shades, once for a practical reason, but now delight the eye while creating a playful yet sophisticated vibe.

The hotel staff power the hotel's welcoming charm with a blend of professionalism and heartfelt hospitality that left me feeling truly restored and valued.

What are the rooms like at the Turbine Hotel and Spa?

The Turbine offers a range of rooms that merge industrial heritage with contemporary design. My Luxury room was fittingly seahorse-themed and featured two views: a balcony overlooking the tranquil canal backed by the lush Knysna Forest and a sweet peak view of the canal from sliding windows. The breathtaking balcony view made early mornings and remote work bearable, if not inspiring. The luxury room's spaciousness was enhanced by bright natural light and quirky décor elements inspired by the building's past.

Whether you choose a Standard room with its cosy charm, a spacious Luxury room with a lounge area, or a self-contained Suite for families or longer stays, the thoughtful mix of modern comforts - king-sized beds, air conditioning, flat-screen TVs, mini bars, and tea and coffee stations - makes for a restful and luxurious retreat. Each room tells a story, through original maps, maritime prints and even colourful contraptions that spark curiosity and inspire the distinctive urge to turn that knob. Go ahead!

What is the service like at the Turbine Hotel and Spa?

The energy of the Turbine, if you'll allow me another power plant metaphor, is alive and humming through the attentive and professional staff. From the warmest welcome on arrival to the genuine laughter when I joked about my discomfort walking to the spa from my room, every member of staff demonstrates genuine care and dedication.

A highlight was the exceptional kindness and dedication of the staff, particularly the breakfast team and spa therapists who went above and beyond to ensure comfort and satisfaction. The hotel management is quick to accommodate special requests with ease and a friendly demeanour, while housekeeping maintains rooms with care, contributing to the overall sense of effortless luxury.

Beyond practical support, the staff's passion for the hotel's unique heritage and guest experience is palpable. Their enthusiasm enhances the boutique feel, as they engage warmly, share the history of the Turbine, and invite guests to discover curiosities hidden around the property.

What is the spa like at the Turbine Hotel and Spa?

The Turbine Spa is a sanctuary of relaxation on the Garden Route. After a gentle but firm 30-minute massage, my muscles and mind felt renewed. The steam room, warm and enveloping, was a personal revelation. I found myself wondering if I could install something similar at home to recreate this blissful afterglow. The spa's range of treatments caters to those needing to unwind after outdoor adventures like hiking on the Circles in the Forest trail or exploring Knysna's many natural wonders.

What are the dishes and drinks like at the Turbine Hotel and Spa?

Dining at the Turbine is an experience of its own. The Island Café's menu offers a delicious blend of locally inspired and international dishes, all served with stunning views of the canal. Give the eggs and bacon breakfast a break. My choices were the flavourful aloo paratha one day, smoked snoek pâté the next, and then the perfectly spiced D's Seafood Curry at lunch.

An unexpected delight was the carrot cake. The best I've ever tasted, beating even my favourite Hare Krishna temple bake. Though chocolate remains my ultimate sweet indulgence, that moist, spiced cake is a must for its touch of sweetness and light texture.

The Gastro Pub complements the Café experience by serving up elevated pub fare with creative flair. Signature dishes, such as the tender chicken burger with tangy pineapple salsa, bring a fresh and exciting twist to classic comfort food. The drinks menu offers expertly crafted cocktails, including a perfectly balanced Cosmopolitan.

Dinner on my last evening was the earthy and comforting Prawn Aglio Olio Nero, with its striking black spaghetti and confit prawn oil. The food here is thoughtfully prepared, offering fresh and distinctly South African flavours with every bite.

What's the area like around the Turbine Hotel and Spa?

The hotel's location on Thesen Island provides easy access to a wide range of activities. From biking around the island, kayaking on the lagoon, to whale watching excursions, there's something for everyone. The peaceful setting brings tranquillity after days packed with adventure or work, while the visual connection to the surrounding forest and water offers a relaxing backdrop to any itinerary.

Other facilities include a pool, conference spaces, all contributing to a comprehensive luxury retreat experience.

Why should you book a stay at the Turbine Hotel and Spa?

The Turbine Hotel and Spa offers more than just a place to stay. It provides a peaceful retreat infused with history, stunning natural beauty, and warm hospitality. The friendly yet professional atmosphere feels like a family welcome without sacrificing service quality. The unique industrial décor, combined with modern comforts, tranquil views, and an abundance of facilities, makes it the perfect getaway whether alone, with a partner, or in a larger group.

The steady, reassuring energy of the former power station remains, powering the hotel's ongoing popularity. The welcoming charm of Knysna is amplified by the Turbine's example of how a boutique hotel should be run, with care for heritage, attention to detail, and a spirit of inclusion. I left feeling restored and already plotting how to share the feeling with my friends and family.
