Ask anyone who loves their Sauvignon Blanc where to find the best in the Cape and chances are they’ll answer back with a single word: Durbanville.
Just 30 minutes from the city centre, the valley’s cool slopes, maritime breezes and Atlantic influence have long made this scenic region prime territory for Sauvignon Blanc that offers the perfect balance of fruit and acidity, all served up in one of the Cape’s most beautiful corners.
Whether you prefer the wines of Diemersdal crafted by sixth-generation cellar master Thys Louw, or the elegance of Maastricht’s Contour Sauvignon Blanc, a single-vineyard bottling from the estate’s highest block, the valley has a style for you.
But the Durbanville Wine Valley is once again giving Sauvignon lovers the chance to discover how the whole can be greater than the sum of its parts, with the recent release of the 2026 Durbanville Sauvignon Blanc.

It’s the fifth vintage of the region’s collaborative flagship wine, a project that began in 2022 with the aim of showcasing the premium fruit and diverse terroir of the region. The idea is simple, but ambitious: bring together the best fruit and some of the most experienced winemaking talent in the valley, then bottle a wine that captures Durbanville’s collective character. Five vintages later, it has become something of a calling card for the region.
This year’s release brings together grapes from Diemersdal, De Grendel, D’Aria, Durbanville Hills, Groot Phesantekraal, Klein Roosboom, Maastricht and Nitida, with the final blend entrusted to Diemersdal. Here winemaker Juandré Bruwer oversaw the blending process, while De Grendel’s veteran winemaker Charles Hopkins led the panel of participating wineries during the preparatory tastings.
While it may seem like a lot of wine geekery not intended for the general public, the truth is anything but. Rather, it’s as showcase of the region as a whole, and an invitation for wine lovers to taste beyond their usual favourites.
The result is a wine that is as easy to stash away in the cellar for a few years, as it is to pop at the next Sunday lunch. It comes with all the cool-climate elegance Durbanville Sauvignon Blanc has long been famous for, while adding freshness, aromatic intensity and a flinty coastal edge thanks to those cool sea breezes blowing in off Table Bay. It’s the energy of a region, in a single glass, and this fifth collaborative vintage shows just why Durbanville is setting the bar for Cape Sauvignon Blanc. Buy a bottle to try now, and a case for the cellar.
The Durbanville Sauvignon Blanc 2026 sells for R130 a bottle, and is available from participating wine cellars.
