Welcome to Mother Sippy, where we shine a light on the talented winemakers, brewers, distillers and mixologists who make sure the Mother City never goes thirsty. From new wine releases to taprooms pouring perfect pints, Mother Sippy is your guide to all that’s good and great in Cape Town’s world of drinks.

One of the joys of living in – or visiting – the Cape is that we have so many world-class wine estates on the doorstep of the city. In fact, some are right in the city! Which means that if you love a little vino, you will never go thirsty in Cape Town.

But you might stretch your budget a little too far if you just have to stock the cellar with another case of Constantia Glen FIVE or a Thelema Chardonnay. The solution? Join the club. The wine club, that is.

However, as much as we might be tempted to stretch our budgets further than we should, winemakers know it’s a competitive world out there. If consumers are spoilt for choice, it means we have plenty of places to spend our money. For us to choose to spend it at a particular estate, it pays them to make it worth our while.

Mother (City) Sippy: The best wine bars in Cape Town

Happily, estates across the Cape offer fantastic loyalty clubs and membership options that range from simple discounts to monthly curated boxes delivered to your doorstep. Throw in free tastings, birthday bottles, restaurant discounts and first dibs on rare releases, and joining a wine estate wine club starts to make a lot of sense if you love your wine. If that sounds like you, read on to discover Time Out’s pick of wine clubs worth the spend.

Pay less to pop the cork

La Motte Collector’s Club

Known for its polished Cape hospitality, heritage buildings, art exhibitions and fine Cape cooking, La Motte is one of Franschhoek’s standout estates. The Collector’s Club is designed for wine lovers seeking a seasonal, cellar-led selection, with access to older vintages and estate events. Each box is curated by Cellarmaster Edmund Terblanche and sent quarterly in line with the seasons.

How it works: For R1250 every three months, you receive a seasonal six-bottle quarterly selection, 15 per cent off wine bought directly from the estate or online, complimentary delivery, a tasting for two, priority access to new releases, access to Vinoteque and invitations to Collector’s Club events.

Constantia Glen SIX

Perched on the upper reaches of the Constantiaberg, Constantia Glen is one of the valley’s most respected wine estates, particularly renowned for its cool-climate Sauvignon Blanc and Bordeaux-style blends. Its wine club, the Constantia Glen SIX, is designed for regular buyers rather than monthly subscribers: buy into the estate, then keep your membership active with an annual spend. It is a good option for Cape Town locals who want cellar-door privileges without driving deep into the Winelands.

How it works: Buy 12 bottles at full price to qualify, then spend R6000 per year to retain membership. Your benefits include 15 percent off wine, an annual members’ event, oenologist-led tastings by arrangement, an online birthday voucher, 20 percent off venue hire, and access to library and special-release wines.

Spier Wine Club

One of Stellenbosch’s best-known historic wine farms, Spier is an all-rounder winelands destination, with a hotel, spa, restaurants and on-site picnics. The Spier Wine Club is a proper subscription rather than a loose loyalty programme, and the box changes with the season.

How it works: For R2000 every three months, you receive nine curated Spier wines valued at more than R2300, delivered to your door, plus 15 percent off wine purchased online and at the farm wine shop. On top of that, you can enjoy a 20 percent birthday voucher, exclusive event invites, 20 percent off treatments at the Spier Spa, and up to 30 percent off the Spier Hotel after your fourth wine-club box!

Groot Phesantekraal: The Wine Herd

One of the oldest farms in the Durbanville Wine Valley, Groot Phesantekraal dates back to 1698 and still feels like a proper working farm, with vineyards, wheatfields, livestock, game and a delightful all-day restaurant in the old stable. The Wine Herd is a strong all-rounder when it comes to benefits, offering plenty of perks for buying wine and visits to the farm.

How it works: Spend R2000 on Groot Phesantekraal wines to join (and R2000 a year to remain a member). Benefits include 15 percent off wine from your second purchase, two Reserve tastings for you and a guest, free shipping, 10 percent off the restaurant bill, birthday wine, pre-release access and a quarterly newsletter.

Groot Constantia Wine Club

South Africa’s oldest wine farm, Groot Constantia, dates back to 1685 and remains one of Cape Town’s most popular heritage estates. The wine club is simple and straightforward: there is no subscription box, no monthly debit order and no large upfront fee. Instead, it operates as a straightforward loyalty club for those who already buy Groot Constantia wines or want first notice of new releases.

How it works: There is no initial sign-up fee. Members receive 10 per cent off Groot Constantia wines purchased at the estate or online, early notice of special and new releases, and the opportunity to pre-order new vintages.

Babylonstoren Wine Club

Babylonstoren is perhaps as famous for its gardens, farm shop and restaurants as for its wines. The Babylonstoren Wine Club is one of the easiest-to-understand subscription options around: one price and monthly delivery. Members receive a curated selection from the cellar, with a little farm-made extra tucked into the box, plus useful estate perks for frequent visitors.

How it works: For R850 per month, you receive three hand-picked Babylonstoren wines, a monthly farm treat, free entry to the estate for you and three guests, a complimentary curated tasting, 20 per cent off wine purchases, access to limited releases, and invitations to wine-club events.

Fairview Wine Club

Just outside Paarl, Fairview is the much-loved wine-and-cheese estate, famous for its goat tower, deli and Goatshed restaurant. Of course, they make a wide range of wines that are both approachable and adventurous. The Fairview Wine Club is one of the easiest to join: just buy half a dozen bottles and you are in. And, honestly, who doesn’t love a cheese discount?

How it works: Buy any six bottles of Fairview wine to join, then buy six bottles a year to retain membership. Once you’re in, you’ll enjoy special wine-club pricing, free delivery on orders of R1000 or more, 15 per cent off Fairview Cheese and Deli products at the tasting room, a complimentary Master Tasting for two, member-only newsletters, and access to a private online shop. This might just be the GOAT of wine clubs!

De Grendel Loyalty Club

On the slopes of Tygerberg Hill in Panorama, De Grendel is the Durbanville estate with unforgettable views back across the city towards Table Mountain. Its Loyalty Club is aimed at regular buyers who want discounts, access and a bit of personal service, rather than a fixed monthly wine box. They’re perhaps most famous for Sauvignon Blanc, but their Merlot is outstanding too!

What you’ll get: Buy 18 bottles or spend R3000 to join the Club, which gives you 10 per cent off current-vintage wines, free delivery on 12 bottles or more, early access to new vintages, member-only wines and a complimentary tasting for two. You can also look forward to invitations to member-only winemaker dinners.

Club DeMorgenzon

In Stellenbosch Kloof, DeMorgenzon has long stood out for its focus on Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay. Did we mention the slightly eccentric practice of playing music to the vines?

How it works: Club DeMorgenzon is a points-based rewards club rather than a fixed delivery subscription, with discounts increasing as members spend more throughout the year. Join with a minimum first purchase of R1500 and make at least one quarterly purchase to keep benefits active. Members receive 500 points on sign-up and 10 points for every R10 spent. You also get 10 to 20 percent off purchases, depending on your membership tier, plus birthday vouchers, member-only selections, event invitations, tastings, cellar tours, and invitations to harvest experiences.

Thelema: The Abbey Wine Club

High on the slopes of the Simonsberg, overlooking the gorgeous Banhoek Valley, Thelema is a benchmark Stellenbosch estate with a 30-year track record of producing some of the Cape’s best reds (though their whites are stellar too). The Abbey Wine Club keeps things simple: buy in, then maintain membership through an annual purchase commitment.

How it works: Spend R5000 on Thelema and/or Sutherland wines (made from their cooler Elgin vineyards) to join, then buy 24 bottles or spend R3500 a year to remain a member. That keeps you eligible for 10 per cent off wine orders, early access to new releases, access to selected library wines, and invitations to events and private tastings. You’ll also enjoy one free Premium Tasting for you and up to three guests each year.

Alto: La Residence Club

Who doesn’t love a bottle of Alto Rouge, right? Stretched along the northern slopes of the Helderberg outside Stellenbosch, Alto has spent more than a century building its reputation as one of South Africa’s great red-wine estates. The Alto La Residence Club is a good fit for red-wine drinkers who already buy Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Rouge by the case.

Time Out tip: the best discounts come when buying six bottles of the same vintage.

How it works: Sign up by creating an account online. Members receive 20 percent off current vintages of Rouge, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon when buying six bottles of the same wine, 15 percent off current and selected vintage wines, and free delivery on orders over 12 bottles or R1000. You’ll also get two complimentary Alto tastings per couple per year, member-only releases, access to special vintages, newsletters and launch/event invites.

D’Aria Wine Club

In the heart of the Durbanville Wine Valley, D’Aria is known for expressive cool-climate wines, including fabulous Sauvignon Blancs and Rhône-style reds worth stocking up on for summer. The Wine Club operates on a tiered system, making it better suited to regular buyers than casual one-bottle shoppers.

How it works: At the Signature level, you can join by buying three cases, but you will need to stay active by buying four cases over 12 months. Benefits include 10 percent off D’Aria wines, newsletters, access to biannual tastings, free delivery on orders over R1250, and a birthday glass of bubbles. Reserve level members join with six cases, receive 15 percent off wine, and enjoy extra accommodation, conference, and tasting perks.

Eikendal: Eikonic

On the R44 near Stellenbosch, Eikendal is a long-standing Helderberg estate offering luxury lodge accommodation, a restaurant and a tasting room, where you can explore a wine range that reflects classic Stellenbosch character. The Eikonic club operates more like a rewards programme than a subscription service, allowing you to earn rand-value points as you move through the tiers.

How it works: Spend R1500 on the Eikendal online shop to unlock membership and receive a leather wine bag. Members then earn rewards of R2 to R10 for every R100 spent, depending on annual spend. Additional perks include a birthday voucher, accommodation discounts, free nationwide delivery, mystery-case offers and winemaker meet-and-greet events.
