If winter had a social calendar, Franschhoek Iconic Bastille would be its headline event.

Every July, the Cape Winelands swaps quiet weekends for French flair, flowing wine, live music, fabulous outfits and enough cheese to keep every charcuterie fan smiling.

Returning on Saturday, 11 July and Sunday, 12 July 2026, the festival celebrates Franschhoek’s French Huguenot heritage with plenty of reasons to dust off your blue, white and red wardrobe.

Here are six ways to make the most of this iconic celebration.

#1. Dress like you’re heading to France

Forget blending in. Bastille is the one weekend when the more French-inspired your outfit, the better.

Think striped shirts, berets, colourful scarves, bold accessories and, of course, plenty of blue, white and red. Every year, festivalgoers compete for the coveted Best Dressed title, making people-watching almost as entertaining as the festival itself.

No beret? No problem. Confidence is the best accessory.

#2. Sip your way through Franschhoek’s finest vino

Wine is the heart of Iconic Bastille.

Your general admission ticket (R450 for a day pass) includes a commemorative wine glass, ten tasting tokens, and access to wine and cheese tastings featuring many of Franschhoek’s celebrated wineries.

Uncorked Exclusive is another stop worth the pop-in. The curated experience brings together premium wine estates and discerning enthusiasts. As part of the Franschhoek Celebrates Bastille celebration, the activation features structured tastings and guided sessions.

It’s the perfect opportunity to discover new favourites while chatting to the people who make them.

Pace yourself. There are plenty of pours waiting.

#3. Pair every sip with something delicious

Alongside the tastings, you’ll find gourmet food vendors serving everything from artisanal bites to hearty winter comfort food.

Wine never likes to travel alone. Luckily, neither does cheese.

Whether you’re craving flaky pastries, local cheeses or something a little more indulgent, there’s no shortage of tasty stops between tastings.

Arrive hungry. Leave very happy.

#4. Dance between tastings

Plenty of entertainment on tap.

One minute you’re swirling Chardonnay. The next you’re dancing with strangers.

That’s the magic of Bastille.

The entertainment lineup includes performances by Amy Jones, The Blend Theory and the ever-popular Absolutely Fabulous duo, while musicians and street performers keep the energy buzzing throughout.

There’s no wrong way to enjoy the music. Even if your dance moves are best described as “enthusiastic”. Don’t worry. We listen, and we don’t judge.

#5. Wander the festival village

One of the best parts of Bastille isn’t something you schedule. It’s wandering.

Take your time exploring the festival grounds. Browse artisan stalls. Discover local products. Snap plenty of photos and soak up the festive atmosphere around every corner.

This year’s central village location makes it even easier to stroll between attractions while enjoying the mountain views that make Franschhoek a much-loved destination.

Don’t rush. Some of the best discoveries happen between planned stops.

#6. Make a weekend of it

One day is fun. A whole weekend is next level.

Franschhoek is famous for its award-winning restaurants, boutique accommodation and picturesque wine estates, making Bastille the ideal excuse for a winter getaway.

Spend the morning exploring the village. Enjoy an afternoon at the festival. Then settle in for dinner beside a roaring fireplace with a bottle of local wine.

After all, Bastille is about more than the festival itself. It celebrates everything that makes Franschhoek special. The festival continues to draw visitors with its unique blend of French heritage, exceptional hospitality and world-class food and wine.

Before you go

A few quick tips will help you get the most from your experience:

  • Book your tickets early; they sell quickly.
  • Dress warmly, but don’t forget your French-inspired outfit.
  • Wear comfortable shoes for exploring.
  • Plan transport if you intend to enjoy the wine tastings.
  • Remember that Iconic Bastille is strictly for guests aged 18 and older.
  • Download a map of exhibitors to help you navigate the festival more easily.

Come for the tastings. Stay for the atmosphere. And don’t be surprised if you start planning next year’s outfit before you’ve left the village.
