Driving innovation behind the bar, while celebrating Africa’s diversity of people, products and – of course – drinks. That’s the mission behind AJABU, Africa's first bi-annual international cocktail and spirits festival.
AJABU takes place in both Johannesburg (March 10–13) and Cape Town (March 14–17), bringing a roster of world-class mixology talent to the Mother City.
The festival is curated by Colin Asare Appiah – named Bar World 100 Most Influential Figures 2023, and co-author of Black Mixcellence – and Mark Talbot Holmes, the founder of award-winning U'Luvka Vodka, and in 2024 will include bartenders from some of the world’s most innovative cocktail bars. That includes Washington DC’s Allegory, Front/Back in Accra, Hero Bar from Nairobi, Mexico City’s Rayo, Sweet Liberty in Miami, and Trailer Happiness from London.
During the festival mixologists from each of these bars will be collaborating with local bars in each city to create a unique drinks experience each night. In Cape Town, you’ll want to pull up a pew at Cause Effect, fable, Talking to Strangers, The Drinkery, The House of Machines, or Tjing Tjing for a taste of what’s on offer. In Cape Town, renowned rum ambassador Ian Burrell will also host a masterclass to take a deep dive into the world of rum.
“We’re incredibly excited to be bringing the teams from such world-acclaimed bars to South Africa, who will work alongside equally outstanding local establishments,” says Asare Appiah.
Tickets for the festival are complimentary, however registration is required as space is limited. Book via Quicket over here. And if you miss out? Don’t worry. AJABU will host another week-long event in Cape Town in November, in partnership with the Cape Town Beverage Show.
