Artscape’s year-long 'A Place for All' programme makes the theatre a must-visit cultural space.

If you’ve ever thought opera, ballet or theatre “isn’t for you” (side-eyeing you, Timothy Chalamet), Artscape’s 55th anniversary celebrations are here to change your mind.
Launching under the theme A Place for All, the year-long programme is part celebration, part reflection and very much an invitation for Cape Town audiences to experience one of the city’s most iconic cultural spaces in entirely new ways.
Once known as the apartheid-era Nico Malan Theatre, Artscape is marking 55 years by throwing its doors wide open with performances, masterclasses, behind-the-scenes access, and community-focused events to make the idea of the arts as a thriving career more alive and real than ever before.
The celebrations officially opened on Tuesday with the major new production of Carmen by the Cape Town Opera. The theatre also made history with its resident Fine Music Radio station, which broadcast the live opening-night performance to its global audience.

Even if you’re completely new to opera, Carmen is a delightful introduction to the genre, thanks to its instantly recognisable music and dramatic storyline. Combined with cinematic staging and overhead subtitles in both English and Xhosa, you'll want to catch it before the run ends on 31 May. Directed by Steven Stead and set in 1930s Seville, the production features an all-South African cast led by Nonhlanhla Yende, alongside Lukhanyo Moyake, Vuvu Mpofu and Conroy Scott.
But the anniversary programme stretches far beyond this magical opening night. From May to November, Artscape will host Saturday Masterclasses to demystify the business of the arts. The classes will cover everything from theatre design and accessibility to arts funding.
There’ll also be lunch-hour concerts, school band performances and behind-the-scenes tours offering audiences a rare glimpse into how productions come together.
For younger creatives - or anyone entertaining a career in the industry - the Artscape Career Day on 6 June will spotlight opportunities across performance, technical production, design and arts management. It’s part of Artscape’s broader focus on job creation and nurturing the next generation of South African talent.
One of the biggest highlights still to come is the black-tie anniversary gala concert, A Place for All, on 8 November 2026, which will bring together some of South Africa’s most celebrated performers and arts companies.
Audiences can expect appearances from Dizu Plaatjies, Amanda Strydom, Thembi Mtshali-Jones and Coenie de Villiers, alongside performances by Cape Town Opera, Cape Town City Ballet, Jazzart Dance Theatre and Zip Zap Circus.
The best way to make the most of the celebrations? Don’t just book a single show. Turn it into a full Artscape experience: Arrive early to soak in the grandeur of this venue, with its imported, one-of-a-kind Murano chandeliers. Take in the newly launched memory mural "Becoming Artscape: A place reborn". Book a behind-the-scenes tour to discover the hidden backstage world that brings the theatre's award-winning productions to life.
Whether you’re a long-time theatre lover or simply looking for a different kind of night out in Cape Town, Artscape’s 55th anniversary is one of the city’s standout cultural celebrations of 2026!
