Jaden Hoedemaker’s road to the World Cup is a story of pure Bafana gees!

Sometimes dreams do come true. At least, that's belief of Cape Town creator Jaden Homemaker.
Making it to the iconic Estadio Azteca for the opening moments of the 2026 FIFA World Cup was never just about buying a plane ticket. It was about proving that no matter how unlikely, some things are worth chasing.
Back in 2010, Jaden says he missed out on experiencing the World Cup action on South African soil because his family couldn't afford it. Despite not making it to previous world cups, he promised himself he would have a chance to experience football's biggest stage when Bafana Bafana qualified for the 2026 tournament last year in October.
With the World Cup taking place across Mexico, the United States and Canada this year, the tickets have been anything but cheap!
That's when Jaden decided to launch a social media campaign documenting his mission to fund his ticket to the opening match - as he took on a string of odd jobs to make it happen.
Alongside running his own firewood business and working as a part-time model, Jaden spent months doing everything from working in a call centre, serving coffee and even offering to be a gaatjie (car guard) - all in pursuit of getting to the World Cup.

Then, just as the dream was gaining momentum, life threw him a setback. During a trip to Rio de Janeiro earlier this year as part of his campaign, Jaden became seriously ill and was forced to put everything on hold.
"I gave up on the dream as I thought it wouldn’t be possible," he says. “But I still believed it could happen - and it did.”
Against all odds, an opportunity eventually came his way and the Cape Town creator found himself landing in Mexico, ready to witness the opening moments of the biggest football tournament on the planet.
Nothing, however, could prepare him for the atmosphere.
"When I entered the stadium and it was insanely packed with 90,000 people all chanting, ‘Mexico, Mexico, Mexico’, that was insane," he says. "Even the walk to the actual stadium. The vibes are unreal. Nothing like I’ve ever experienced."
His most unexpected World Cup moment? Being recognised simply for being South African!
"Every five minutes someone wants a photo with me. I feel like a celebrity here because people keep stopping me just because I’m South African," he laughs. "I actually ended up on national news today. That was pretty memorable."
Beyond the football, it’s the spirit of the Mexican people that has left the biggest impression.
"Mexicans are real hustlers. They’re very passionate people about their country and their sports. That’s definitely very similar to us."
And when it comes to food, there was one clear winner.
"The tacos here are amazing!"
For South Africans following Bafana Bafana’s journey from home, Jaden has a simple message: A World Cup experience is possible with hard work (and a little luck).
"It's something you can work and save towards in your life, it's an experience you’ll never forget it."
From stacking firewood and juggling side hustles in Cape Town to standing among thousands of football fans singing in Mexico, Jaden’s story is a solid dose of Bafana Friday gees. Let's go Bafana Bafana!
