The annual Cape Town Cycle Tour rolls into Cape Town on Sunday, March 10, and the city streets will be alive with lycra-clad cyclists

2024 will mark the 46th Cape Town Cycle Tour event, with this year’s route following the familiar 109-kilometre loop from the city centre to Muizenberg, and along the False Bay coastline to Cape Point. The route then turns north and follows the coastline to Hout Bay and Camps Bay, before finishing in Green Point. Two-thirds of the route runs through the protected Table Mountain National Park, with dramatic sea view for much of the route.

With 27 500 cyclists expected to take part, the Cape Town Cycle Tour is the world's largest timed cycling event. And an extra 2500 cyclists will tackle the shorter 42-kilometre route, launched in 2023 to make the Cycle Tour accessible to younger riders, or those not up for the 109-kilometre epic.

But even if you’re not in the saddle the Cycle Tour is a festive day, with up to 100 000 spectators set to line the route to cheer on the riders.

‘The Cape Town Cycle Tour is not just a race; it's a celebration of community, resilience, and the beauty of our city,’ says David Bellairs, Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust Director. ‘We invite everyone to join us for an unforgettable day of cycling and camaraderie.’

And there are plenty of options for coming out to support. The Cycle Tour has a handy app for planning where to go, but they also recommend:

  • Paradise Road, for a glimpse of cyclists conquering 'Whine-berg Hill', the steepest climb on the route
  • Glencairn Beach or Simonstown for cyclists framed by picturesque coastal views
  • Noordhoek Farm Village, before riders tackle Chapman’s Peak
  • Hout Bay Main Road and Suikerbossie for thrilling racing in the final hill of the race
  • The finale at Sea Point, with the sharp left turn into Queens Road, and a thrilling conclusion near the DHL Stadium.
