Beachgoers are being urged to take extra care after a dangerous lagoon breakout on the northern end of Noordhoek Beach.

According to a post by SANParks, crews from the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) station in Kommetjie responded to a near-drowning earlier today, near the beach car park.

Footage of the rough waters, as the Noordhoek lagoon broke through to the sea has been shared to social as it created a wide, deep channel with strong, fast-moving water.

Do not attempt to cross the lagoon channel

With the tide pushing in, conditions are especially hazardous. Beachgoers are being asked to avoid the northern section of the beach near the car park, and to keep children and pets well away from the water.

Conditions can change quickly, especially while the breakout is active.
