Cape Town rugby fans, clear your calendars. SA Rugby has confirmed that the Springbok Women will host Ireland in a historic first Test series in October.

South Africa will take on Ireland in the new WXV Global Series at Athlone Stadium, marking another significant step forward for the women’s game. More importantly, it gives local supporters the chance to watch international rugby at one of the city’s most beloved rugby venues.

Athlone Stadium has become something of a home away from home for the Springbok Women in recent years. The venue has hosted several memorable fixtures and has developed a reputation for generating a passionate atmosphere.

Now it gets another chance to showcase women’s Test rugby on the international stage.

The ultimate test for the Springboks

For the Springbok Women, this series is about much more than two matches. Test rugby remains the ultimate measuring stick.

Springbok Women head coach Swys de Bruin said the series is the perfect way to conclude a jam-packed 2026 international season.

“It is hard to believe we have never played in a Test series, something that also reminds us of how important it was for the Springbok Women to break into the top tier of the women’s world game,” SA Rugby quoted Swys as saying.

There are no shortcuts. No lucky escapes. And definitely no hiding behind a good social media post. Over 80 minutes, every scrum, tackle and lineout gets put under the microscope.

Ireland arrives as a respected opponent with a growing reputation in the women’s game. The visitors have continued to build momentum in recent seasons, making them exactly the kind of opposition South Africa needs if the team wants to keep challenging the world’s best.

“To have Ireland come to our shores after their recent solid performances in the World Cup and Women’s Six Nations, where they finished third, will demand some special performances from our team,” added Swys.

The series also spotlights the growing investment in women’s rugby from both unions. International Test matches remain crucial for player development, squad depth and exposing athletes to the intensity that only elite-level rugby can provide.

Bringing the gees

A home advantage could prove valuable for South Africa.

Athlone Stadium has become familiar territory for many players in the national setup. The support from Cape Town’s rugby community is expected to create a lively backdrop for both encounters.

There’s nothing quite like a packed stand urging a winger towards the corner flag or collectively holding its breath as a conversion drifts towards the uprights.
