South Africa marks National Women’s Day on Sunday, 9 August. While conversations around women’s empowerment usually centre on tributes and social media hashtags, lasting change also starts with something deceptively simple: a powerful idea.
That’s the thinking behind TEDxDistrictSix Women. The independently organised TEDx event brings together women with bold ideas, remarkable stories and the courage to challenge the status quo.
Held at Cape Town’s historic Homecoming Centre in District Six on Saturday, 1 August, this year’s gathering carries a fitting theme: The Ripple Effect.
Sparking a movement
The premise is straightforward.
One conversation sparks another. One story inspires someone else to act. One idea, shared in the right room, can ripple through communities long after the applause fades.
It’s an apt message for Women’s Month, when South Africans reflect not only on the legacy of the 1956 Women’s March but also on the women shaping the country’s future today.
TEDx events have always been about “ideas worth spreading”, but TEDxWomen takes that mission a step further by creating space for conversations around leadership. Equality. Innovation and community.
The events are designed to amplify diverse voices while inspiring audiences of all genders to engage with issues affecting women.

This year’s TEDxDistrictSix Women lineup is packed with the kind of changemakers who don’t talk about impact; they live it.
Among them is Sabrina Walter, founder of Women For Change, whose advocacy has helped raise gender-based violence higher on South Africa’s national agenda.
Ocean conservationist Zandile Ndhlovu, founder of the Black Mermaid Foundation, continues to redefine who belongs in marine spaces.
Entrepreneur and investor Alexandria Procter brings a perspective shaped by business, public service and youth development.
Together, they represent a broad spectrum of modern leadership. Activists, entrepreneurs, storytellers and innovators who prove there isn’t one blueprint for success.
An intimate gathering
The setting is equally meaningful. District Six has long symbolised resilience, memory and community.
Hosting an event focused on transformation in a place with such deep historical significance adds another aspect to the conversations unfolding on stage.
Unlike sprawling conferences where attendees can disappear into the crowd, TEDxDistrictSix Women intentionally keeps the audience intimate, welcoming around 100 guests.
The smaller format encourages genuine networking and conversations that continue well beyond the final talk.
