A fire broke out at Laborie Estate in Paarl on Saturday, destroying Giovanni’s Restaurant and eight Werf accommodation rooms in the latest reminder of the Western Cape’s elevated fire risk during the festive season.
The estate has confirmed that no injuries were reported, and all guests and staff were safely evacuated. Emergency services responded swiftly to contain the blaze, preventing further damage to surrounding structures and vineyards.
"This is a difficult day for Laborie Estate and we appreciate the understanding and respect shown as we move forward," Laborie Estate said in a post to its social media platforms.
In an updated post on Sunday, the estate confirmed it will be closed to the public until Tuesday, 22 December, with alternative arrangements being made for bookings during this period. For inquiries about existing bookings, guests are advised to reach out to tammianne@laborieestate.co.za.
The estate also expressed gratitude to firefighters, first responders and the local community for their rapid and coordinated response. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The incident comes amid dangerously high fire conditions across the Western Cape, driven by persistent south-easterly winds, dry vegetation and warm temperatures. Weather forecasters have warned that the upcoming holiday period - marked by strong winds and limited rainfall - has significantly increased the risk of fast-moving fires across the province.
Laborie Estate stated that its immediate focus is on securing the affected areas and assessing the full extent of the damage. Further updates on operations and accommodation will be shared once assessments are complete.
As the festive season gets underway, authorities continue to urge residents and visitors to exercise extreme caution with open flames, braais and discarded cigarettes, and to remain alert as fire danger remains high across the region.
