Time Out says

If you’re looking for a light, entertaining night out, Pretty Woman: The Musical is a sure bet. But you'd better move, as the production opened to sold-out performances for its opening week of its Cape Town run.

The smash-hit stage adaptation of the beloved 1990 rom-com - running at the Artscape Opera House until 19 April before heading to Johannesburg's Monte Casino - draws plenty of enthusiasm from the crowd. And it’s easy to see why.

This is comfort theatre at its most polished: familiar, fun and super nostalgic.

The production leans into what audiences love most! Snappy one-liners lifted straight from the original film, big romantic moments and a Bryan Adams and Jim Vallance score that’s easy on the ears. You’ll find yourself swaying along more than once.

There’s a strong sense of '90s nostalgia throughout - from ring-dial telephones to Beverly Hills excess - all wrapped in glossy set design. The slick lighting and seamless scene changes are on point to keep you engaged with the storyline, even when you already know exactly how it ends.

Performances that carry the charm

Christopher Jaftha brings effortless charisma to Edward Lewis, delivering a performance that balances suave confidence with just enough vulnerability as he weaves between the detached bachelor and crooning lines of Something About Her. Opposite him, Leah Mari shines as Vivian Ward, bringing the required depth to her role while still snappily infusing it with relatable, real street-smart quips.

Together, they navigate the show’s romantic highs and steamy moments with care. While not every beat lands with full emotional weight, the audience’s laughter and reactions suggest the occasional awkwardness is part of the charm rather than a distraction.

Tiaan Rautenbach shines in his chameleon-esque presence on stage, switching seamlessly between the roles of Happy Man and trusted concierge Mr Thompson to deliver standout moments from the original production. Thuto Lesedi Gaasenwe leans into the loyal, spirited Kit De Luca supporting role with gusto and reverence encapsulated in "You take care of you!" At the same time, Bo Molefe offers standout comedic relief as the entertaining bellhop dabbling in discretion to be a real crowd-pleaser with his sharp timing and fluid dance sequences.

Big energy, easy escapism

This is a production that knows exactly what it is, and it's not trying to reinvent the story. Instead, it is here to celebrate it. And for fans of the original, that’s the point! The production shifts between shopping sprees, opera nights, and unexpected romance to culminate in the modern Cinderella-style arc that makes it so elatable and enjoyable.

Slick, accessible direction brings choreography to ensemble numbers like Luckiest Girl in the World and Never Five Up on a Dream, bringing the kind of high-energy spectacle you want from a Broadway import.

This production is fun escapism - plain and simple - and sometimes that’s exactly what you want from a night at the theatre.

Why book?

If you’re after a feel-good musical packed with nostalgia, romance and big ensemble moments, this one delivers. Just don’t wait too long.
