The 14 best wine estates for tasting Merlot in the Cape

From award-winning single-vineyard wines to memorable cellar-door experiences, these are the Cape estates worth visiting for a glass of Merlot.

For years Merlot had something of an image problem. Too often dismissed as the soft, easy-drinking alternative to Cabernet Sauvignon, its reputation wasn't helped by the 2004 film Sideways, in which wine snob Miles famously – with some colourful language – refused to drink the stuff.

But this classic Bordeaux grape is capable of far greater complexity. In the right hands, it delivers beautifully layered wines with ripe plum and cherry fruit, savoury notes, elegant tannins and impressive ageing potential.

And South African winemakers are increasingly showing just how versatile Merlot can be. From the maritime vineyards of Durbanville to the mountain slopes of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, producers are crafting wines that challenge the variety's reputation.

And there's no better excuse to explore than International Merlot Day, celebrated each year on 7 November. Whether you're after a serious comparative tasting or a relaxed afternoon in the vineyards, these are the Cape wine estates to visit.

Where to go for marvellous Merlot!

Villiera

For a proper introduction to South African Merlot, Villiera's red-wine tasting is hard to beat. This family-owned Stellenbosch estate offers two expressions of the grape in a single sitting: the approachable estate Merlot and flagship Monro Merlot, which has earned five-star recognition in Platter's Wine Guide. Cabernet Sauvignon and DTE Red complete the flight, offering an excellent comparison of Bordeaux varieties and blends. Beyond the tasting room, Villiera is home to a wildlife sanctuary, where guided game drives offer the chance to spot giraffe, zebra and other wildlife. Book ahead to combine the two experiences.

De Grendel

Few estates can compete with the views from De Grendel in the Durbanville winelands, where vineyards tumble down the Tygerberg. Under cellar master Charles Hopkins, Merlot has long been an important part of the portfolio. The standout is De Tijger Merlot, made from some of the farm's oldest vines, offering dark cherry, plum and cassis fruit with notes of mocha and spice. The 2022 won Platinum at the 2026 Michelangelo Awards, while the 2024 received Double Gold. Guided tastings are available, while De Grendel Restaurant is a fine choice for lunch with panoramic views.

Delaire Graff Estate

Merlot doesn't get much more glamorous than this. Perched high on the Helshoogte Pass, Delaire Graff Estate combines exceptional wines with contemporary art, landscaped gardens and glorious views across Stellenbosch. The bottle to seek out is Banghoek Reserve Merlot, made from the estate's oldest single vineyard. The 2023 vintage was named among South Africa's Taransaud Merlot Top 10 for 2026. The Wine Lounge, refurbished in 2025, offers tutored tastings in luxurious surroundings. Afterwards, wander through the sculpture-filled gardens or book lunch at Delaire Graff Restaurant or Lorenzo's Cucina Italiana.

Meerlust Estate

Not many South African estates have a longer association with Merlot than Meerlust, which has produced the variety since 1984. This historic estate is best known for Rubicon, its acclaimed Bordeaux-style blend, but the single-varietal Merlot deserves attention too. The standard tasting covers the current range, including Merlot and Rubicon, while a seated VIP experience offers older vintages served in Riedel glassware. The tasting room occupies the estate's former dairy, while the wine shop features a photographic timeline of its history. It's a fitting setting to explore the Bordeaux traditions of Stellenbosch.

Glenelly Estate

There's a distinctly French accent to the wines at Glenelly Estate, established by May-Eliane de Lencquesaing, former owner of Bordeaux's Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande. The Glass Collection Merlot 2022 earned a place in the 2026 Taransaud Merlot Top 10. Explore the range in the estate's tasting room, then visit the extraordinary Glass Museum, home to some 600 pieces spanning 2000 years of glassmaking. Afterwards, settle in at The Vine Bistro for classic French bistro cooking with a South African touch.

Waterkloof Wine Estate

High above False Bay, Waterkloof takes a distinctive approach to winemaking. The contemporary winery appears to float above the Schapenberg slopes, with sweeping ocean views, while the vineyards are farmed using regenerative and biodynamic principles. The wine to discover is Circumstance Merlot, grown on south-westerly slopes overlooking False Bay. Cooling maritime winds contribute to a fresher, savoury style with plum, sour cherry and herbal notes. The Chorus Tasting Lounge offers curated wine flights; so ask about including the Merlot. Afterwards, settle in at Chorus restaurant for fine dining or Osteria Cheese Bar for relaxed Italian-inspired fare.

Dornier Wines

Architecture and fine wine make a compelling combination at Dornier, where a striking modern winery sits against the backdrop of Stellenbosch Mountain. But it's the cellar's consistent success with Merlot that makes this a particularly worthwhile stop. Dornier has featured in South Africa's Taransaud Merlot Top 10 for three consecutive years, producing wines with dark cherry, plum and blackcurrant flavours, subtle fynbos notes and integrated oak. Tastings at the Wine Lounge showcase the wider portfolio of Bordeaux varieties, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Cellar tours can also be arranged in advance.

L'Avenir Wine Estate

L'Avenir is better known for Pinotage and Chenin Blanc, but its Provenance Merlot 2024 was named Judges' Choice at the 2026 Taransaud Merlot Top 10 competition and is worth the detour for a tasting. French influence runs through the estate, where the cellar door tasting room takes inspiration from French bistro culture, with a cosy fireplace and garden seating overlooking the farm's lake. Visitors can choose from Provenance and Single Block tastings, alongside cheese pairings and specialised experiences focusing on Pinotage and Chenin Blanc. Older-vintage tastings can also be arranged in advance.

The tasting room offers Premium and Reserve flights, while the Wine & Fynbos Cupcake Pairing matches wines with cupcakes inspired by indigenous Cape botanicals. Rainbow's End Wine Estate

Altitude makes all the difference at Rainbow's End, a boutique family-run estate in the Banghoek Valley. Its vineyards rise to around 550 metres above sea level, creating conditions particularly well suited to more complex Merlot. The result is a fruit-driven wine with plum and mulberry aromas, a smooth palate and refreshing acidity. The tasting room is a treat for red-wine enthusiasts, with Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah also available. Order a cheese or charcuterie platter and enjoy the spectacular mountain views.
