Local Intel: Sechaba Gqeba

Cape Town is eclectic, worldly and effortlessly confident. That's according to cultural tastemaker Sechaba Gqeba.

Striking the right balance is exactly what makes the Mother City so appealing as a destination, states Sechaba Gqeba.

Celebrating 15 years in broadcasting, Gqeba has become one of South Africa’s most recognisable voices - on radio, television and some of the country’s biggest stages.

Though not Cape Town–born, she has made the city her own, drawn to its food and wine culture, thoughtful design, and spaces that feed both creativity and calm. Here’s how she experiences Cape Town right now.

What’s inspiring you in Cape Town at the moment?

As someone who's very invested and has a keen interest in the food and wine scene, I'm inspired by how elevated the culinary space in Cape Town is. It puts South Africa on the global map. We’re seeing an exciting new generation of young chefs coming to the fore, pushing boundaries and telling fresh stories through food.

The wine scene has always been splendid, but what many people don’t realise is just how competitive South African wines are on a global scale.

As someone who considers herself a foodie and gravitates towards those kinds of experiences, it’s been incredible to watch the city evolve.

What’s a common misconception about Cape Town?

That it’s unaffordable, property is expensive, yes, but maintaining a lifestyle here doesn’t have to be. There are so many experiences that cost very little, and you can live really well without constantly spending big.

How would you describe Cape Town style compared to Joburg?

Having lived in both Johannesburg and Cape Town for periods at a time, I would say, Cape Town has a more sort of laid-back approach to the expression of personal fashion and style. I think Cape Town looks for more understated ways of self-expression when it comes to fashion like, 'I'm trying, but I'm not trying'.

What about Cape Town’s culture really speaks to you?

The architecture and the way spaces are curated. I love intimate wineries with art galleries, boutique hotels, and niche establishments that play with design and visual storytelling. Those spaces bring together all my interests - art, food, wine and culture.

Explore the Franschhoek Winelands

“If I want to unplug and recharge truly, Franschhoek is where I go. More than just wine, the Winelands represent a slower, more thoughtful way of experiencing the region for her. “It feeds your soul!”

Beyond the well-known estates, Gqeba is also drawn to the smaller, more intimate wine farms that blend wine, food and creativity.

“You find these intimate wineries that have art galleries on the properties, and I find those spaces fascinating."

Shop local at Nje Curated Fashion

Gqeba supports local fashion brand Nje for its slick silhouettes and expressive designs.

"They are an award-winning brand that makes and retails unique, diverse, and ready-to-wear clothing items."

I'm including them in my mix of experiences I think really reflect the essence of Cape Town. Some are fun, accessible and cost very little, while others lean into the more exclusive experiences we’re lucky to have right on our doorstep. That balance is important to me. My itinerary speaks to my personality, and shows how effortlessly Cape Town allows you to move between the two."
