On March 12, Kelly Luce reads from her first story collection, Three Scenarios in which Hana Sasaki Grows a Tail, at The Wild Detectives. Prepare to meet your next favorite short story writer.
I wish I’d thought up that bit about “your next favorite short story writer”, but it’s a phrase that has shown in up in several reviews of this small, elegant book. Other writers seem to love Kelly’s work, and I can’t imagine readers who will not make themselves at home in her engaging, intriguing, sometimes melancholy, and often peculiar literary landscape. Hana Sasaki does indeed grown three different tails in three different situations, and she is not the only character to sport a furry appendage from the base of her spine. There is also a toaster than predicts the manner of a supplicant’s death. An elderly man who cleans the fountain in a public park knows much about his neighbors because as he sweeps up the coins tossed into the fountain he hears their wishes. Room 17 at Karaoki Live! holds unexpected dangers.

And come to hear her March 12, 7 PM at The WIld Detectives.
