HSMAI Dallas/Fort Worth Chapter says
:about the auction
The idea of the auction is to provide each guest with a list of auction items (ranging from dinners and trips to golf outings and spa packages) and a numbered paddle. Each table is supplied with a bucket that is placed in the middle. Starting with the first item, the auctioneer describes that item and asks the guests who are interested in bidding on this item to toss a coin in the bucket. The guest then holds their paddle in the air. The auctioneer calls out the paddle numbers that are held up. A “gonger” (who is blindfolded and cannot see or hear what is going on) is responsible for ringing the gong after a few seconds. The last number called out when the gong is rung has won that particular prize.
This sequence of events goes on throughout the evening until all prizes are won. Thus, guests are able to win amazing prizes valued at several hundred dollars, only by spending just a few coins…all while having a great time! The opening reception also includes an impressive silent auction and a “Corks and Forks” auction for additional chances to win great prizes in a more traditional auction setting.
