Reflecting the strength of the Crow Collection’s Korean works of art, this lecture will provide a historical and cultural context on the ceramic culture of Korea dating back to the late 1500s. Specifically, Jinyoung will discuss the significant developments in Japanese ceramic ware that were generated as an unforeseen result of the Imjin War (nicknamed the “Pottery War”) between Korea and Japan of the 1590s.
In this lecture, Jinyoung will illustrate how technology interacted with aesthetics in the early development of East Asian porcelain ceramics by providing several examples of ceramics from this significant period and examining the works closely with regard to their political, social, and cultural contexts.

Bio: Jinyoung Jin is the Director of Cultural Programs at the Charles B. Wang Center in Stony Brook, New York. Prior to the Charles B. Wang Center, Jin was the Gallery Director of The Korea Society, located in New York, for ten years. Jin’s particular focus is on visual culture. A curator of modern and contemporary Asian art, she received her MA in Art History from Columbia University and BA in Art History from Hong Ik University in Korea.
