REASON & PURPOSE A Candlelight Vigil honoring Deah Barakat, Yusor Abu-Salha and Razan Abu-Salha who were murdered Feb. 10, Tuesday night in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Deah Barakat, 23, was a second-year student at the University of North Carolina’s School of Dentistry. Yusor Mohammad Abu-Salha, 21, was set to enroll there in the fall. Deah & Yusor recently married in December. They were both alumni of North Carolina State University. Razan Abu-Salha, 19, sister of Yusor, was a sophomore student at nearby North Carolina State University in Raleigh was studying architecture and environmental design. While Chapel Hill police described the killing as a dispute about parking, the father of the women, Dr. Mohammad Abu-Salha, described it as a hate crime. ***Program details will be announced shortly. We must come together to stand in solidarity with the families of the victim specifically, and to stand against religious violence and hate crimes in general. EXPRESSIONS OF SOLIDARITY: Wear SCRUBS: Deah & Yusor were both students preparing for a future in the field of Dentistry. We ask attendees who are currently students at a School of Dentistry or Medicine, or are health professionals, to please wear your 'Scrubs' as a sign of solidarity. STREETCHALK: Razan was known for her creative spirit and artistic style. She loved artistry, photography. She had a keen eye for beautiful angles. So we will honor her by creating beautiful images & messages of 'Love,' 'Hope,' 'Support' along the sidewalk.
