The Turning Point In 35mm + A Performance By Dallas Neo Classical Ballet

Dallas Neo-Classical Ballet will present four new works in conjunction with the screening of the 1977 film, The Turning Point, starring Mikhail Baryshnikov, Anne Bancroft, and Shirley McLaine. The first piece, entitled Sous le Soleil by Emilie Skinner, takes place on a French beach-side and is a lighthearted examination of the young, free love that was rampant in the late 1960's. Dancers wiggle and bop to the sounds of 60's surf musicians, such as the Gee Cees, and Santo and Johnny. You Are a Memory by DNCB company member, Addison Reed, is a re-telling of the classic ballet, Giselle. This time we find ourselves in a women's sanitarium in 1931, where Giselle has been placed after her broken heart drove her insane and almost killed her. She still pines for Albrecht, who is betrothed to another. In this trio, it is Giselle’s longing that sets the tone, along with two other broken women. They dance solemnly to Bibo No Aozora by Ryuichi Sakamoto. The third piece, entitled Cupid & Psyche by Victoria Tran, is the story of a stunningly beautiful girl, Psyche, born after two older sisters. People throughout the land worship her beauty so deeply that they forget about the goddess Venus. Venus becomes angry that her temples are falling to ruin, so she plots to ruin Psyche. She instructs her child, Cupid, to pierce the girl with an arrow and make her fall in love with the most vile, hideous man alive. But when Cupid sees Psyche in her radiant glory, he shoots himself with the arrow instead. The live performance will conclude with a romantic pas de deux from Romeo and Juliet with original choreography by Sir Kenneth MacMillan and music by Prokofiev. THE TURNING POINT SYNOPSIS The story of two women whose lives are dedicated to ballet. Deedee left her promising dance career to become a wife and mother and now runs a ballet school in Oklahoma. Emma stayed with a company and became a star though her time is nearly past. Both want what the other has and reflects back on missed chances as they are brought together again through Deedee's daughter who joins the company.
