Situated on the prominent India Gate Circle, the National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA) is a dome-shaped, lightly art deco-ish vintage building in the Lutyens' Delhi style. You’d slow down just walking past it. Step inside, though, and the grandeur gives way to something more intimate: room after room of India's most significant modern and contemporary art, over 17,000 works deep. The National Gallery of Modern Art is easily the best place in the city for an introduction to art, or even for a slow date, given its central location.
Why go?
There are art installations, 3D paintings and fine artworks from A-listers like MF Husain (often called the Picasso of India), Rabindranath Tagore, and other masters like Raja Ravi Varma and Jamini Roy, alongside portrait virtuoso Amrita Sher-Gil, whose gaze-heavy paintings have a way of stopping you mid-step. Bright shades of tangerine and green run riot through much of the Indian contemporary work on display: bold colour that feels like a deliberate departure from the muted pastels and brutalism of the West.
Time Out tip: Grab an ice cream and enjoy it by the India Gate, a few minutes' walk from the museum, as the evening light turns golden. It's practically a ritual for Delhiites.
