This body of work is from the last year - coming back to clay as a medium, after Scott Lary has not been working in clay for several years. It was clay that first moved him into making sculptural work, combining thrown forms with hand-built forms and manipulating them together. These pieces are all hand-built, mostly from slabs. In all his work—clay or other mediums, he is very interested in organic shape and form, showing the origin of the organic material, as well as the manipulated object. However, being trained as a designer, Lary's work also reflects structure, grids, geometry and a modernist aesthetic. He is interested in the contrast of organic versus geometric, rough versus polished, spontaneous versus intentional. Part of this work reflects more thoughtful engineering and construction, while other pieces are more spontaneous and surprising.

Scott was born and raised in Kansas. He received his BFA in Design from the University of Kansas. For 25 years, he has worked professionally as a Designer/Art Director, while simultaneously making art and exhibiting his work. Scott moved to Denver in 2000, where he is a freelance designer and makes sculptural, mixed-media art at his home studio.
