cmDance is proud to partner with the Newman Center of the Arts and the Biennial of the Americas and the Denver Turnverein to bring a performance and workshop of Brazilian dancing by professional dance troupe Companhia Urbana de Dança!

All Ages Class: 11:00am-12:00pm
Lunch: 12:00-12:30pm
Performance: 12:30pm-1:30pm

Founded in Brazil in 2004, Companhia Urbana de Dança is an ensemble of performers, led by artistic director and choreographer Sonia Destri Lie. The dancers, eight men and one woman, come from the favelas of Rio de Janeiro where dance is not often seen as a legitimate profession. Members of Companhia Urbana de Danҫa use dance as an outlet to escape the challenges of their daily lives; company member Rafael Balbino, says that dance “helped me to find the right way, especially with the dangers of my neighborhood,” while others credit dance with providing much-needed release, community, and discipline. They use techniques and styles from hip-hop and urban moves, contemporary dance, samba, capoeira, and Brazilian social dance. The company works to create a dialogue about contemporary urban trends and the realities of the poverty-stricken in Brazil. It uses the arts as a vehicle for speaking out against social and racial inequality and to make a difference in people’s lives.

As to the dance workshop, this is an informal activity for people of all ages and abilities — no dance experience required! Sonia, lead choreographer of the group, directs the whole group while the dancers are out in the crowd working with small groups. The idea is to share some of their movements and by doing so to share their culture and their stories. Everyone learns together and by learning and moving together creates community. It’s meant to be fun and to be a way to make new friends.

In addition to participating with the dancers from Brazil at the Denver Turnverein on the morning of Tuesday the 14th, everyone is welcome to come to "Biennial Night at Civic Center" (opens at 5:00, first performance at 7:00), which is a free series of performances celebrating the Biennial. CUD from Brazil and Denver’s own dance company Wonderbound will perform at 8:00p.m. Other performers include Ian Cooke, Black Violin and Bomba Estereo (http://biennialoftheamericas.org/what-to-see-and-do/biennial-2015-festival/performances/). People can also then see CUD give a full-length performance of its own works here in the Newman Center at 2:00 on Sunday July 19.
