Urban League Young Professionals of Metro Denver says
The 100 Black Men of Denver is excited to bring an education initiative to the greater Denver area on behalf of our national organization, the 100 Black Men of America. This initiative is called Project SOAR, which stands for Student Opportunities, Access and Readiness. The concept is that throughout the country The 100 will host community conversations on education choice, more specifically increasing access to quality public education options. Often this opportunity lies within enrichment programs that are not typically conducted in traditional classroom formats, so we would also like the discussion to include community-based options for learning.

For this event, we will have a guest speaker/panelist, the nationally renowned educator Dr. Steve Perry, founder of Capital Prep Magnet Schools in Hartford, CT and Harlem, NY who will provide a unique perspective on elevating performance of schools by elevating the expectations of student performance. To provide local perspectives on the topic, we would like to round out the panel with 6 additional panelists from the greater Denver area who would incorporate a diversity of viewpoints expressed by Mentors, Mentees, Parents, Educators, Administrators, Business and Clergy community partners.

Our event, "Mobilizing the Village", will be held on Monday, January 23rd at 6pm at the Blair Caldwell African American Research Library. The format will be a staged panel of 6 community partners, Dr. Steve Perry and our emcee Pastor Kyle Speller. The community discussion is planned from 6-8pm in the main conference room followed by a cocktail hour on the 3rd-floor gallery from 8-9pm with hors d•oeuvres and other light refreshments, where the conversation can continue among the participants. The event will be filmed as a part of a documentary being produced by The 100.

Our target is to have 150 attendees from all parts of our community to have a productive and informative conversation on the topic of education and community advancement. The desired outcome of this event is that community participants gather tips, tricks and tools to enhance the learning experience of their children, students, mentees, or fellow citizens.

The 100 are excited to bring this event to our community and look forward to having the input perspectives of a diverse audience and panel. If you are interested in attending the event as a community audience member or if interested in participating on our panel, please contact me indicating your interest.
