WHAT IS IT: A full day of free panel discussions and workshops on a wide range of issues to help residents improve their neighborhoods.

STILL TIME TO REGISTER FOR NEIGHBORHOODS RISING SUMMIT ON SATURDAY





Detroit residents will hear from community leaders and officials who are directly involved in tackling issues and challenges to improve the city this Saturday at the 6th annual ARISE Detroit! Neighborhoods Rising Summit.




The free event, featuring 12 workshops, will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the downtown campus of Wayne County Community College District, 1001 W. Fort Street, Detroit, 48226.



In addition to keynote speaker Alice Thompson, CEO of Black Family Development, workshop panelists speakers will include:




--Tom Goddeeris of the Grandmont Rosdedale Development Corp., and Vanessa Peake of the Urban Development Corp., participating in the Neighborhoods Organizing Workshop.




--Detroit District managers Marshall Bullock, Kim Tandy and Odell Tate, participating in the blight fighting workshop on how to collaborate with the city to spruce up neighborhoods.




--April Anderson, owner of Good Cakes and Bakes, William Curry of the real estate development firm Fourth Dynasty Enterprise, and Laura Sigmon of Best Practices Consulting Services, LLC, participating in the Entrepreneurship workshop.




--Author Aaron Foley, who has written on the tensions of creating the "new Detroit," and Jordan Twardy, of the Eight Mile Boulevard Association, participating in the Old Meets New workshop.




--Rob St. Mary of Patronicity, Jessica Meyer of the Build Institute/Kiva Detroit, and Angela Barbash of Reconsider, participants in the alternative funding workshop on raising money for community programs using social media.
