Nicknamed “The Black Woodstock,” Wattstax was a benefit concert organized by the Stax Records label to commemorate the seventh anniversary of the 1965 Watts riots. With performances by Isaac Hayes, Staple Singers, The Bar-Kays, and more, this ambitious film intersperses footage from the riots with commentary from community voices like Jesse Jackson. The film was a Golden Globe nominee for Best Documentary in 1974.
