Course Overview
The American Academy of Periodontology treatment guidelines stress that periodontal health should be achieved in the least invasive and most cost-effective manner. Therapeutic periodontal debridement requires exceptional skill of the dental professional as well as knowledge of a variety hand and powered instruments that can be utilized to achieve successful nonsurgical therapy. Through discussion of patient cases exhibiting different periodontal diseases, a theoretical basis for the indication of hand and powered instruments will be provided. Participants will also gain experience with a variety of hand instruments as well as powered instrumentation equipment/inserts via the utilization of manikins

Course Objectives
At the completion of the course participants will be able to:

Discuss the current evidence base for treating periodontal disease via nonsurgical periodontal debridement
Gain an understanding of and experience with a variety of hand instruments utilized for treatment of periodontal disease such as Langer curettes, furcation curettes and specialty scalers
Compare and contrast various powered equipment/inserts available
Employ fundamental instrumentation techniques with powered instruments including the air polisher
Select best practice periodontal therapies given varying types of periodontal diseases
Utilize best practices with dental insurance codes in order to provide a clear method to document treatment and select appropriate procedures to maximize insurance reimbursement for the patient
