Standing Still In Blowing Trash says
Come see new work by Emily Wood, presenting a new series of large still-life paintings composed of items the artist picked up off the ground. These paintings of garbage, old food, disposable items, used condoms, scratched lottery tickets, cigarette butts, food wrappers, dead animals and discarded clothing; tell us more about ourselves than we can learn from any polite interaction. Emily's series has been executed in the style and tradition of the Golden Age of Dutch genre painting of the 15th and 16th centuries; where seemingly simple still-life tableaux belie the complexity of the society which they reflect. With just a little context, which Emily gracefully provides for each piece, the mundane becomes magical. The profane looks like paradise. And for one shining moment, while beholding this show, living poor isn't a sin.
