Composer and musician James Cornish begins his residency with an original vocal work.

"Twilight and Steel" will explore the confluence of cognition and impulse in our modern existence.

JAMES CORNISH is a third-generation Detroiter, multi-instrumentalist and composer. He has written three operas, and is one Detroit’s most prolific creative musicians and new music composers. In 2009, he was a recipient of the NEA grant American Masterpieces: Three Centuries of Artistic Genius for his ensemble work. In 2011 he was commissioned to compose a series of works for dance in public spaces in Detroit parks. He is the composer of three experimental operas, and is is a co-founder of The Great Lakes Ensemble, a cutting-edge music and movement performance ensemble. His work has been featured at the Edgefest creative music festival, the MoDe Sound and Dance Project, Chicago Calling Festival, Rapid Pulse performance art festival, Access Art’s Belle Isle Art Exhibits, and the Detroit Institute of Art. James currently curates a series at Detroit Contemporary called Radical Music Detroit focused on nurturing experimental music in the city. He has performed with a variety of cutting edge luminaries including Faruq Z Bey, Jandek, Ellen Fullman and Perry Robinson, and many others.
