Gateway is transforming its cinema-level centre court into a Forgotten Island-inspired experience, with interactive activities for children and their friends.

Looking for something different to do with the kids this school holiday?
Gateway Theatre of Shopping is bringing a little movie magic to Umhlanga with a new Forgotten Island activation.
From 21 September to 4 October 2026, Gateway’s centre court on the cinema level, between Toy Kingdom and Nike, will be transformed into a Forgotten Island-inspired space where families can make memories and have some fun before heading to the cinema.
The best part? It’s completely free.

The activation takes its inspiration from DreamWorks Animation’s Forgotten Island, a new adventure about two lifelong best friends whose final night together takes a very unexpected turn.
Jo and Raissa stumble through a mysterious portal and find themselves on the fantastical island of Nakali, home to magical and mythological creatures inspired by stories from their Filipino families.
There is, however, a catch. To get home, they must give up the memories of their friendship.
Cue the existential crisis and one very important mission to ensure they don’t forget each other forever. At Gateway, visitors can celebrate their own friendships without having to make any such trade-offs.

The free Gateway activation arrives ahead of the film’s South African cinema release, giving families a chance to step into the world of Forgotten Island before watching the adventure unfold on the big screen.
The film comes from the studio behind How to Train Your Dragon, Shrek and The Wild Robot. Its voice cast includes Grammy and Academy Award winner H.E.R., Liza Soberano, Dave Franco, Lea Salonga, Jenny Slate, Manny Jacinto, Dolly de Leon, Jo Koy and Ronny Chieng.
Written and directed by Joel Crawford and Januel Mercado, the film combines fantasy adventure with a story about friendship, family, and the memories that shape us.

Whether you’re looking for something to do with the kids during the school holidays or need an excuse for a bestie outing, Gateway has a new island to explore, and you won’t need a passport.
