Severe thunderstorm warning for Durban

eThekwini Municipality has placed its Disaster Management, Fire and Emergency Services teams on high alert following severe weather warnings issued by the South African Weather Service (SAWS).

It’s a Level 4 warning for severe thunderstorms today, and a Level 2 warning for damaging winds today heading into the early hours of tomorrow.

The forecast warns of:

  • Heavy downpours
  • Excessive lightning
  • Possible hail
  • Southerly winds reaching speeds of up to 83km/h

These conditions could lead to localised flooding and damage to structures, with driving conditions made hazardous.

Keep alert, particularly in areas prone to flooding and where strong winds could bring down branches or damage loose structures.

Emergency personnel are on standby, while Durban Metro Police will monitor flood-prone areas, manage traffic, and close roads deemed unsafe.

Power outages affecting areas across the city

The severe weather warning comes as eThekwini Municipality’s Electricity and Energy Directorate attends to a high volume of power outages across the city.

Electricity teams were dispatched to affected areas on the weekend to assess faults and carry out repairs. The municipality has cautioned that restoration times will vary depending on the nature and extent of each fault.

Residents can check the latest progress updates for affected areas through the City’s electricity outage updates portal HERE.

The municipality has appealed for patience as teams work to restore electricity as quickly and safely as possible.
